APOLYTON INTERVIEWS....
BIG HUGE GAMES
Brian Reynolds President, Big Huge Games |
When did you first visit Apolyton and why?
Well really I've been here since the beginning--before the
beginning!--in the sense that I used to come to the Ultimate
Civilization II site. I came to see what people thought of Civ2, what
was going on in the way of new scenarios, modpacks, and so forth. I was
really stunned (and happy) at the amount of fan support for the game.
How often do you visit Apolyton now and for what purpose?
Sometimes several times a week, sometimes once a month. Between projects
I mostly "lurk" to see what's happening, what people are talking about,
what they like/don't about games I did or competitors did.
How would you characterize Apolyton's course over the last two years?
Better and better--more games covered, more detail, more news, better
sub-sites for each game.
What's needed for Apolyton to become better? What's missing?
You've done a great job in growing to be more than just a pure "Civ"
site, following products by other companies and designers that were
inspired by or are related to (if only by common interest of fans) to
the original core interest. To continue to get better, I hope Apolyton
will continue to generalize as a site. Perhaps a name change is
eventually in order... "The Apolyton Strategy Site" or even just "The
Apolyton Site"!
Where do you see yourself and Apolyton after 2 years?
Hey, looking forward to the next ten years! What does "Apolyton" mean,
anyway?

Tim Train VP Operations and Development, Big Huge Games |
When did you first visit Apolyton and why?
I first visited with any frequency when I began work on the Alien Crossfire
expansion for Alpha Centauri, right after Firaxis shut down its user forums.
When the team solicited user requests for features and improvements, I
expected a lot of great ideas, but in the end the fan suggestions were some
of the best stuff in the final product. My personal favorite was from a fan
who suggested the ability to free captured faction leaders; although it took
a lot to get it working properly, it was one of the coolest new features in
the game.
How often do you visit Apolyton now and for what purpose?
During Alien Crossfire, I visited Apolyton every day. There's no better
place for direct contact with other intelligent and experienced strategy
game fans. Lately, I have to admit, I've been a little less frequent in my
visitation. The process of starting Big Huge Games has been much more
time-consuming that I had imagined, and I haven't had the time to interact
with other gamers as much as I might like. Once we have stuff to discuss,
however, I'll be on there much more frequently.
How would you characterize Apolyton's course over the last two years?
'Better and better'--the guys at Apolyton are great with the way they've
expanded everything, and the commitment it takes from them to run such a
well-designed and extensive site is truly impressive.
What's needed for Apolyton to become better? What's missing?
It's hard to see how it could improve itself. At some point, the
proliferation of products and genres that fit under Apolyton's umbrella may
dictate some changes to the organization and focus of the site. So long as
the commitment to quality on behalf of the crew remains unchanged, however,
I think those changes will just evolve naturally over time.
Where do you see yourself and Apolyton after 2 years?
I hope to be knee-deep in our first project, chatting with all the people on
Apolyton who are excited about the next generation of real-time strategy
games!
