a Civilization II scenario by
Michael Witry <mwitry@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu>

Ever since 1865, men have asked, "What would have happened if the South won the Civil War?" I believe that the two nations would have inevitably been brought into conflict with each other again. In this scenario, I have created a war between the nations in the 1930's, with the Great Depression looming over the hostilities.

First, apologies.

-I must apologize to anyone who feels offended by the use of the terms "Negro" and "Jap" in this scenario. I was torn between whether to follow my own sensibilities, or to attempt to recreate the 1930's. In the end, history won out. Anyone who finds this too disturbing is welcome to change the terms in the scenario files.
-Obviously, I cannot be historically correct in this scenario, or else nothing would happen. I selected the 1930's for the time of the conflict because of the internal strife in the U.S. in real life, and because it provided an opportunity to use near-World War II technologies.
-Several major cities are not represented on this map. Serious apologies are due to Charleston, West Virginia and Carson City, Nevada, which I believe are the only two state capitols not represented in the game. And, of course, if you live in Baltimore, sorry. There's just no room.
-Armor is not available at the beginning of this scenario. While this most likely would have been discovered by this time, even in an alternate universe, I felt it was an element that needed to be introduced later.
-If you are a PC user, this scenario may have a few odd glitches. This is because I created this scenario on my Macintosh. If there's anything that makes the scenario unplayable, drop me a line at michael-witry@uiowa.edu and let me know.
-This scenario is distributed without sound files. However, I have created sound files for this scenario (or, rather, adapted them). If you would like to receive them, send me an e-mail with your comments on this scenario, and I'll send you the sound files in your choice of Mac or PC format.

Next, notes on play.
The two big boys in this scenario are the Confederacy and the Federals. They are the most fun to play. However, negotiations are permitted with Mexico, Britain, and Quebec, and any of those three could be a wild-card in the conflict. Playing as the Communists is not much fun, unless you live in Berkeley and have a psychological impasse against fighting Communists. The computer tends to build a three-front war: one front in northern Virginia, one in Missouri, and one in southern California. The East Coast front is most active.

Advice:
C.S.A.- You have an early advantage. Exploit it! If you don't the North's industrial might will overpower you. Build up the transportation system and try to industrialize. Keep some mobile units around to deal with rebellious sharecroppers. If you're lucky, you may be able to pull another nation into the war, but you'll still have to do most of the work.
U.S.A.- The Confederates will make their move early- if they're smart. Your job is to hold your ground, as much as possible. Let your industrial might do the work for you, and advance gradually. Use the navy and the air corps to your advantage. Watch for Communists within your borders. Keep an eye on Kansas.
Mexico- Your country is in no position to fight. Stay out of the war unless you're forced to enter. Did I mention industrialize and irrigate?
UK- Canada, eh? It sure could use some internal improvements. Build a transcontinental railroad if you can. Keep an eye on Quebec. If you have to fight, leave the tough stuff to the Americans and use naval support.
Quebec- Internal improvements, internal improvements, internal improvements. You may get sucked into war with your neighbors. Try to hold your ground.
Communists- Wait for events to reinforce you with enough units to make your move. Most of your revolutionaries will appear in densely populated areas, where they probably won't be successful. Ergo, it would be prudent to move them onto the Great Plains or Rockies and focus your efforts.

Unit Notes:
The Confederate Infantry and Cavalry are more talented than their foreign counterparts. This is due to a proud Confederate military tradition. The Pillbox is a simple defensive weapon, but difficult to destroy. Barbed Wire fills the same role as the Pillbox, but is cheaper to build. The Armored Train is basically a land-based battleship. Socialists and Negroes are only available to the Communists. Socialists ignore City Walls, because they are considered to be subverting the city's defenses from the inside. Attaches only appear due to events. It is advisable to not kill Attaches.

Historical Notes:
1862: Abraham Lincoln dies of Marfan's Syndrome.
1863: U.S. President Hannibal Hamlin sues for peace after a major Confederate advance. Great Britain and France sign an alliance with the Confederacy.
1866: Cash-strapped Mexican emperor Maximillian sells the provinces of Sonora and Chihuahua to the Confederacy.
1867: Great Britain forms the Dominion of Canada from its North American posessions. Quebec refuses to join, sparking the Quebec War.
1870: The CSA agrees to mediate a peace settlement in Quebec, leading to Quebecois independence.
1866-1914: The Confederacy engages in a series of conflicts in Latin America to protect its business interests. The U.S. remains neutral. Foreign investors build up Confederate industry.
1890: The CSA invades Cuba and claims it as its own territory.
1914: Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assasinated. The Confederacy enters the war on the Allied side. The Federals remain neutral.
	1917: Germany is defeated.
1925: International protests lead the Confederacy to adopt a plan of gradual manumission of slaves. Negroes, however, are still forbidden to obtain citizenship.
1926: Sonora and Chihuahua become the Confederacy's 14th and 15th states. The Cuban statehood referendum fails.
1928: The Confederate constitution is amended to allow the President to serve multiple terms.
1929: The stock market crashes worldwide.
1933: U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt begins to implement the "New Deal". The Confederacy, in an attempt to protect its industry, passes a universal tariff in violation of the 1863 Treaty of Alliance. Great Britain and France cancel their alliances with the Confederacy.
1934: Huey Long becomes President of the Confederacy. The scenario begins.

Credits:
Very little of the work on this scenario was actually done by me. I just put together bits and pieces to make a collage. So, a smooth shout out to the following:
-Harlan Thompson, for his unit and icon collections.
	-Michael Ranay, for flag icons.
-the Apolyton web site, where I finally figured out how to make custom graphics work on a Mac, and MacUser, who posted my first scenario.
-Apple Computer, for making my iMac.
-Microprose, for making a swell game.
-the World Book Encyclopedia and the Shepherd's Historical Atlas, for maps and historical background.
-Erwan, Michael Jesczenka, Alex the Magnificent et al. for more units.
-Many, many people whose names I don't know. If there's something of yours in here, drop me a line at michael-witry@uiowa.edu and let me know.
	You guys all rock.

What's Next?
I'm considering a scenario about China between 1895 and 1914, representing imperial influences. I'm also playing around with a few other ideas.
