Exodus 1947 version 1.1 Scenario for Microprose CivII
Written & Designed by Alexandre Ostrowiecki (Nani) from Brazil - 1999

The year is 1947, the United Nations General assembly has
just voted for the partitition of Palestine in two states,
one jewish and one arab. Finally, after two thousand years
of exile, the jewish people will have a country again, in
their own land. But the Arabs of Palestine rejected the UN plan.
A civil war begins, in which each side tries to gain ascendancy.
But the perils to the new state of Israel are just begining. On
independence day, while it is involved in the civil war, the
regular armies of five arab countries invade Israels territory.
Are you capable of warding off the invasion? Can you lead your
people through the difficulties and protect Israel? Or do you
prefer to command the arab armies and wipe the jewish state of
the earth?

THE PLAYERS

Here is a short description of the players pro'n'cons:

-British Empire: I highly recommend that you dont choose
the Britons. I have placed them in the game only to make it more historically
acurate. In the begginning of the game, the british are in posession of the
island of Cipruss only, but they have bases on the continent, with lots of
advanced units. If you wish to use the english to make a conquest campain,
its going to be a piece of cake. Leave them alone.

-Israelis: These are the guys the scenario was made for. If you want fun and a
challenge, choose to play with the israelis. You will have very few units in
every city and find yourself at war, at the first turn, with nothing less than
five arab nations. Your enemies will be sparkling with units and surrounding most of
your border cities. Their units are as cheap as bananas in Brazil. All is lost? Not
quite. The israelis have unique and extremely useful units, such as the soldier farmer
Kibutznick and the Palmach strike troops. And Besides that, lots of Jewish refugees,
from Ciprus camps and volunteers from around the world are desperate to reach the Holy
Land and help their brethren defend the state of Israel. The key to winning the scenario
with the israelis is to make good use of imigrants. In order to give the player more
flexibility, I have included three diferent events.txt files:
	Events Easy.txt    => For beginers         10 imigrants/turn
	Events Medium.txt  => Standard events.txt   6 imigrants/turn
	Events Hard.txt    => A dam hard challenge! 3 imigrants/turn
If you wants to load a diferent file than the default (Medium), simply open the
Events (easy or hard).txt that you want and save it as plain Events.txt

-Palestinians: When the UN voted for the partiticion of Palestine, two states
where suposed to be created, one jewish and one Arab, for the arabs of palestine.
When war broke out, the arabs of palestine where suported by the four neighboring states.
If you choose to play with the palestinians, you will be allied to the other four arab nations
and will have lots of units, including the excelent arab legion and legion cavalry. But you
will have to stand the bulk of the fighting, for your cities will be intermixed with the
israeli ones.

-Egiptians: By far the strongest of the arab nations in the area, Egipt has a large
standing army, with tanks and artillery ready to strike Israel from below. If you succed,
you can capture Tel Aviv in the beggining, thus isolating Jerusalem and destroying Israels
largest city. It is arab civ most recommended to be played by humans. Even though, its too
easy to get any arab civilization in this scenario. Thats because the AI cant use imigrants
properlly. If you want to get the arabs and still have a challenge, try the following steps:
	- Open the Events Easy.txt and save it as Events.txt
	- Go to the Rules.txt and change the stats of the imigrant unit to make it more
        useful in combat.
These steps will increase the dificulty of the game for the arabs.

-Lebanese: Lenanos is a small nation just north of Israel. Its economy is a joke, but
the country has some large troop concentrations on Israels northern border. A successful
atack by the lebanese can capture Haifa and isolate the hole of northern Israel.

-Sirians: The Sirian army, fortified on top of the Golan hights, represents a serious threat
to the jewish state. If the sirians decide to go down the slopes they can wreak havoc among
the ill defended Kibutzim on the fertile valley and eliminate the jewish presence there.

-Jordanians: The little Hashemite Kindom has little to gain from this war. But since the hole
of the arab world is united in this crusade against Zionism, Jordan got involved too. As the
jordanians, you will be able to control the most diciplined army of the region, the
Arab Legion. Use it wiselly and youll be master of Jerusalem.

IMPORTANT - THE UNITS

When you start playing this scenario, youll notice that many things have changed about
the units. The most important of them being that all air and sea units had their
movement ranges dramatically increased. The B-29 (Superfortress) bomber, for example, can fly
two 25 squares sorties. this means that this unit can virtually cross the map ,without
refuelling, in two turns. The Navys gunboat sails 14 squares per turn. This was decided in
order to make the game more accurate. It would be unthinkable that an airplane cant fly
some 500 miles without refueling. I have tested this feature, too, and it turned out that
it gets quite fun to deal with long range aircraft.

Besides that, roads have a movement rate of five, not just three, and many land units have a
movement alowance of 3 or 4.

These chances are intended to make the scenario more historically acurate, since the area we
are covering is very small (the land of Israel) and it usually took just a few hours to get
from one place to the next.

Also, I wanted to make city walls have a more modest role in the game. So, all tank and
artillery units ignore city walls. This is to make the game more interesting and acurate,
since the israeli war of independence was a very mobile one with almost no static
defensive lines.

Also, you will notice that there is an israeli unit, the Imigrant, that seems to serve no
special purpose, for it has atack and defence rates of 1 and can perform no special task,
such as settle or diplomacy. You wont even be able to build them, but will have loads of
them in cipruss and other places. This unit was intended to be a shield reserve. since it costs
100 shields, when they are disbanded, you will have 50 shields in the city where the imigrant
is. This can be very usefull when you want to speed projects up. Also, it is one of the main
sources of production for Israel.

Finally, I want to remind the player that this scenario was built mainly for Israel. Perhaps
Ill one day release an arab version, but right now its way too easy to be the arabs. Thats
because, besides beeing plainly stupid, the AI cant make use of imigrants, and if encharged
with playing Israel, the computer will never disband their useless imigrant in order to
build more powefull units. If you make good use of imigration and the unique units
the israeli army possesses, than youll win. Otherwize, youll be responsible for the young
nations premature disapearance.

on the Golan Hights, Ign ZOC and alpine)

Hagana Unit: Atk 5 Def 5 Mov 2 Hit 2 FP 1 (Regular forces of the IDF, good movement
and fighting abilities)

Mossad: Atk 3 Def 3 Mov 3 Hit 2 FP 1 (Israeli inteligence agent)

Imigrant: Atk 1 Def 1 Mov 1 Hit 1 FP 1 (Can not be built. they apear sometimes on the map,
seeking to live in the land of Israel. Since they have poor abilities, they are suposed to
be disbanded(incorporated) in any israeli city for a bonus of 50 shields)

ARABS
Arab legion: Atk 6 Def 5 Mov 2 Hit 2 FP 1 (Specially trained by the british, the arab legion
was a formidable infantry fighting force)

Arab Soldier: Atk 4 Def 4 Mov 1 Hit 2 FP 1 (Regular arab forces, not as mobile and powerful
as the legion, they provided the bulk of the arab armies)

Suicide: Atk 8 Def 1 Mov 1 Hit 2 FP 2 (Suicide bombers are extremelly cheap to build and
very dangerous to the enemies. They are destroyed after attacking)

Legion Cav.: Atk 8 Def 3 Mov 3 Hit 2 FP 1 (The Legion Cavalry is a very powerfull and
mobile force, trained by colonel Glubb Pasha)

Arab Cavalry: Atk 7 Def 2 Mov 2 Hit 2 FP 1 (Arab cavalry is a dangerous force, although
weaker than the legion cavalry)

Arab Spy: Atk 0 Def 0 Mov 2 Hit 1 FP 1 (Arab spies work as diplomats in the regular game)

EVERYONE
Machine gun: Atk 3 Def 6 Mov 1 Hit 2 FP 1 (One of the best defender units)

Armored Car: Atk 8 Def 4 Mov 4 Hit 2 FP 2 (A relativelly cheap and very powefull
strike engine. IGN City walls)

WWI Artillery: Atk 10 Def 1 Mov 1 Hit 2 FP 2 (Moderatelly strong canon. IGN City walls)

1870 Cannon: Atk 10 Def 1 Mov 1 Hit 2 FP 1 (A poor canon, best for light sieges.
IGN City walls)

Artillery: Atk 10 Def 1 Mov 1 Hit 2 FP 3 (A powerful piece. Can crush most tipes of defenses.
IGN City walls)

Anti-Aircraft: Atk 3 Def 4 Mov 1 Hit 2 FP 2 (A cheap unit, with double defense x air and
able to atack nearby aircraft)

Gunboat: Atk 4 Def 4 Mov 14 Hit 2 FP 2 (Dont get frightened by the gunboats tremendous
move range. Most sea units of this scenario have more than 12 move points, in order to
be more historically accurate)

Recon plane: Atk 2 Def 1 Mov 14 Hit 2 FP 1 (An improvised, weak, fighter. Good for recon
missions and, with luck, can shoot down some bombers. Very cheap)

Messerschidt: Atk 5 Def 2 Mov 14 Hit 2 FP 2 (A nice model from Germany. Can shoot down some
bombers and do escort missions. Def x2 versus air)

Spitfire: Atk 6 Def 3 Mov 16 Hit 2 FP 2 (A very special unit indeed. Can shoot down most
planes and have x2 defence versus air. The Spitfire can escort friendly bombers by
ocupying the same square as theirs during a mission. In this scenario, Spitfires can
stay on air for two turns in order to protect bombers)

B-17 Bomber: Atk 12 Def 1 Mov 20 Hit 2 FP 3 (Bombers in "Exodus" have a tremendous
range. If it werent so, it would be unreallistic and would harm gameplay. If we
would keep the 8 squares move allowance, it would mean that an airplane can fly more slowly
than a tank division on road)

B-29 Bomber: Atk 15 Def 3 Mov 25 Hit 2 FP 3 (The ultimate Bomber, the "Flying Fortress
could ward off the fighters and proceed to a heavy punishment of enemy cities)

Great aliyah Piramids (Israel - Aliyah in hebrew means ascendancy, "the imigration
to the land of Israel", it reflects the great influx of imigrants, which dramatically
increased the Jewish population in Palestine, from 50.000 in 1880 to 600.000 in 1948, to
5 milion nowadays)

Israeli Gardens Hanging Gardens (Israel - Reflects the boost in morale caused by
the advanced irrigation methods)

Asian Comerce Colossus (Israel - It is located in the southernmost port of
Eilat, while Israel retained it, the commerce with the east could continue)

Dome of the Rock Oracle (Palestinians - It is the third most important site for the
muslims and a place they have to defend fiercelly)

Wailing Wall Great Wall (Palestinians - The most important religious place for Jews)

WWII Training Sun Tzu WA (Israel - During WWII, while the palestinian arabs from
proclaimed their simpathy to Hitler, the jews voluntered to the british army. Thousands of
them received precious training during the war and this reflected in the war of independence.
All israeli units start and are built as veterans)

British Diplomacy Marco Polo Embassy (English)

Zionism Michel Chapel (Israel - For most jews, Zionism was as important as
the religion. It was a movement that advocated the need for jews to build their own country
and to live there. For that ideal, thousands of people packed their things and left their
countries of origin, helping to create the state of Israel)

German Imigration Copernicus Observ (Israel - Without knowing it, Hitler gave an
important boost to israeli develpment when he expeled the German jews. Cultured and well
educated, they provided an increase in science production)

Upgrade Factory Leo workshop (Not yet built - All civs start with the possibility
of building this wonder)

Macabbee Spirit JS bach cathedral (Israelis - Macabee was another name given to the
Irgun group. Operating with terrorist tactics and often disaproved by the word opinion and
even the other jews from palestine, the Irgun kept operating and provided a morale boost
to the israelis)

Russian Imigration Isaac Newtons College (Israelis - The imigration from Russia
brought with it a large number of skilled professionals)

World Jewish Help Adam Smith TC (Israel - It is today very clear how important the
help of jews from around the word was to the establishment of the state, both financially
and in volunteers)

Womens conscription Womens Sufrage (Israel - the conscription of most women to the IDF,
Israel defence forces, opened the way for new possibilities in terms of womens social standing)

Steel industry Hover Dam (Not yet built - All civs start with the possibility
of building this wonder)

Research Project Seti program (Not yet built - All civs start with the possibility
of building this wonder)

Television Central Cure for Cancer (Not yet built - All civs start with the possibility
of building this wonder)

Someone might want to ask why are most of the good wonders going to the israelis? Does the author
want to make a superciv? No, the truth is that I could divide the wonder between the civs
and compensate the israelis with more units, but I thought that, since the player is suposed
to take the israelis, it would be more fun to keep the wonders, with all their special effects
and have to work with a smaller number of units.

Special Thanks

I certainly could never build this scenario alone. In order to finish this job, I was helped
in many ways by other civ fans, without whom the work wouldnt be done.

First of all, to my friend Marcelo Berland, who, with inexaustible patience, discussed with
me each and every aspect of the scenario, to which purpose weve lost many university classes.

Also, most of the graffic images that Im using were downloaded from the net. I wont be able
to credit all graffic creators, because I dont have all their names, but my thanks to the
guys who created the Allicons.gif, Allcities.gif and allflags.gif files, Harlan Thompson,
Michael D. McCart and Michael D. Raney. These are magnificent compilations.

Finally, I would like no tell the players that Ive assembled a very large library of CIV II
files, including about 1200 graffic icons (some repetitions, inevitably), 62 sound files and
loads of programs and txt files with tips for scenario creation. If anyone whishes to get these
files, simply send me an E-mail describing what you want and Ill be happy to search something
for you.

Thats all folks, I hope you will enjoy my scenario as much as I enjoyed building it. This
is my first scenario and Im thinking about building others on the Arab-israeli wars. I would
really apreciate if you send me any comments that you have. Anyone at all. This would be
much usefull to improve the quality of my future scenarios.
