^^By 2008, America is a nation deeply divided. Increasingly alienated
by a culture that is growing away from them, the Christian Fundamentalists
have all but retreated from mainstream American life. Yet their numbers
grow and grow.
^
^^The two-party system has disintegrated and dozens of small political
coalitions fight for the spoils.
^
^^The New Progressive Party wins the 2008 Presidential Election, with 78
electoral votes and 24 Percent of the popular vote. The Christian Essentialists
come in second, with 76 electoral votes and 26 Percent of the popular vote.
Christian Essentialist candidate Alan Keyes claims to have been robbed of
the Presidency, but swears that he will respect the election results unless
it is the "will of the American people." With large sections of the Armed
Forces espousing the Essentialist credo, tensions are high as President Peale
prepares to take office.
^
^^Then the global communications network collapses, and the nation is plunged
into darkness.
