                CivII Scenario Setup Instructions

*** IMPORTANT: DO NOT UNZIP INTO YOUR MAIN CIV2 FOLDER ***
** OR YOU MAY OVERWRITE THE GAME'S ORIGINAL DATA FILES! **

Background scenario information is provided in README.TXT

Firstly, if you have installed the Conflicts in Civilization
or Fantastic Worlds expansion packs, follow these steps:

1. Create a folder in C:\...\Civ2\Scenario and call it MIDEARTH
(where ... is the path to your main Civ2 folder).

2. Extract the contents of SCENARIO.ZIP into Civ2\Scenario\Midearth
NB: If using WinZip, make sure that the box "Use Folder Names"
is checked (it should be checked by default anyway). This will
ensure that a folder called SOUND will be created for the files.
If this should not work for any reason, just create a folder
called SOUND in Civ2\Midearth and move the sound files (*.wav)
   into it.

3. Run CivII and choose Begin Scenario from the starting menu.

4. Open the folder Civ2\Scenario\Midearth.

5. Open MIDEARTH.SCN to begin playing.
NB: Saved games will go into the Civ2\Scenario\Midearth folder.

6. If you HAVE installed Conflicts in Civilization but NOT
Fantastic Worlds, the file game.txt may not work automatically
and you may need to rename or move the original game.txt in the
main Civ2 folder and replace it with the game.txt file in this
scenario zip. Replace the file again afterwards to restore
the game to its original form.

7. Again, if you have not installed the Fantastic Worlds pack,
the file events.txt may not work. This is not essential,
as it just adds extra atmosphere and the game works without it.

Secondly, if you have NOT installed EITHER of the expansion packs,
you will need to manually replace the files in the Civ2 folder,
which is actually not as hassley as it sounds :)

1. Make backup copies of the following files in the Civ2 folder:

   game.txt
   rules.txt
   city.txt
   advice.txt
   pedia.txt
   labels.txt
   council0.txt
   council1.txt
   council2.txt
   cities.gif
   icons.gif
   units.gif
   people.gif
   terrain1.gif

2. Copy all the files EXCEPT the sound files (*.wav) from this
scenario zip into your main Civ2 folder. (You don't actually
need to copy changes.txt or readme.txt as these are just files
I have created. I also don't think events.txt will work unless
you have the expansion packs installed, but I'm not sure).

3. If you want to have authentic sounds, also make backup copies
of all the sound files in the Civ2\Sound folder, then copy
all the sound files (*.wav) from this scenario zip into
   your Civ2\Sound folder.
NB: Because I have used the Recurse Folders command, make
sure that WinZip does not create a second SOUND folder inside
the Civ2\Sound folder and put the files there. If it does so,
just move the sound files directly up into the Civ2\Sound folder.

4. In order to get the Civilopedia to work properly (so that it
gives you information on this scenario instead of the usual
information), you will need to disable the file GET_INFO.EXE
in the Civ2\Pedia folder by renaming it or moving it to
   another folder temporarily.

5. The file events.txt may not work, but it is not essential.

6. Run CivII and choose Begin Scenario from the starting menu.

7. Open MIDEARTH.SCN to begin playing.

8. When you have finished playing this scenario, just restore
the original files as listed above, including the sound files
   and GET_INFO.EXE.

                        *** ENJOY!! ***
