Description:

This patch extends the tech tree into the near future and allows
for the development of new military strategies based on novel advances
that make possible new types of military units which differ from the
old in quality as well as quantity.  In other words, there are units
designed to be used in new ways, rather than just more powerful
versions of old units.  There are no laser cannons or super bombers;
instead there are units which offer similar levels of strength but
which can deliver it in different ways, just as paratroopers are
similar to riflemen but are capable of utilizing novel new strategies.
In this way the NNFP allows for the evolution of the battle field
into the 21st century.  This patch also requires more future advances
for spaceship construction, thus encouraging civilizations to
develop their modern arsenals before the game is ended by an
unrealistically early journey to Alpha Centauri.




Changes in the Tech Tree:


--Nuclear Warfare (Nuclear Fission & Rocketry):
-Allows:  Manhattan Project, Nuclear Missile.
This advance makes it possible for a civilization in a world where
Nuclear Weapons are used to master the relatively simple arts of
Rocketry and yet not wield atomic destruction.  This is both more
realistic and more desireable.


--Turbine (Combined Arms & Labor Union):
-Prerequisite for:  Hydraulics.
-Allows:  Hovercraft.
Sophisticated Turbine technology makes it possible to produce heavy
armored hovercraft.  Using the production power of organized labor
and the highly fluid strategies of Combined Arms, this weapon can be
put to devastating use on the battle field.


--Hydrodynamics (Turbine & Stealth):
-Prerequisite for:  Aerodynamics.
-Allows:  Hydrofoil.
Stealth technology is applicable to acquatic craft given sufficiently
advanced Turbine systems.


--Aerodynamics (Hydrodynamics & Nanotechnology):
-Prerequisite for:  Ion Drive.
-Allows:  Glider.
Nanotechnology allows for the production of sophisticated materials
which capable of producing amazing results when combined with the advanced 
hull designs developed in Hydrodynamics.


--Artificial Intelligence (Computers & Genetic Engineering):
-Prerequisite for:  Organogenesis.
-Allows:  Planetary A.I. (formerly SETI Program).
This is perhaps the single most important academic advance in human
history.  The creation of new forms of intellect, capable of working
on scientific problems with us, using modes of thought of which we
are incapable.


--Nanotechnology (Plastics & Laser):
-Prerequisite for:  Aerodynamics, Organogenesis.
-Allows:  Airship & SS Structural.
This technology represents a quantum leap forward in the field of
materials engineering.  By manipulating molecules directly, engineers
are able to create substances stronger than steel and light as air.
Perfect for floating fortresses and interstellar spacecraft.


--Organogenesis (Artificial Intelligence & Nanotechnology):
-Prerequisite for:  Future Technology.
-Allows:  SS Module.
With A.I. to guide our systems and Nanotechnology to make building
blocks of individual atoms, it becomes possible to create living tissue
from inanimate matter.  The development of self-sustaining fully sentient
living environments capable of supporting human beings through the deep
gulfs of space is one result.


--Ion Drive (Aerodynamics & Fusion Power)
-Prerequisite for:  Future Technology.
-Allows:  SS Component.
The relativistic speeds required to reach a distant star in a reasonable
time are produced with the Ion Drive, built using the sophisticated materials 
and design techniques of Aerodynamics and powered by the limitless energy
of Nuclear Fusion.

SS Structural requires Nanotechnology.
SS Module requires Organogenesis.
SS Component requires Ion Drive.
Manhattan Project requires Nuclear Warfare.

--Planetary A.I.  (Artificial Intelligence):
The surface of Mars turned into an enormous Artificial Intelligence powered
by the geothermal energy of the planet's molten core.  This powerful entity
effectively doubles the scientific research of the civilization that controls
it.



New Units:


--Balloon (Theory of Gravity):

-Balloons make use of the different densities of hot and cool air to float.
They are useful as reconnosance and exploration vessels, but are damaged
by gradual wear and tear every turn spent without maintenance in a city
or airbase.  Made obsolete by flight.


--Hovercraft (Turbine):
Cost:   100     Movement(Range):  5(0)
Attack:  10     Firepower:        2
Defend:   7     Hit Points:       3
-Hovercraft are armored vehicles that float on a cushion of air produced by
a powerful turbine.  They can move quickly over land and sea, superb for
quick offence or powerful defense.  They receive gradual damage every turn
spent without maintenance in a city or airbase.


--Hydrofoil (Hydrodynamics):

Attack:     6     Firepower:   2
Defend:     6     Hit Points:  3
Transport:  5
-A Hydrofoil uses powerful turbines and novel hull design to skim along the
surface of the water, and is capable of great speed.  It is useful as a
naval transport, and has several advantages over a Transport:  it can see 2
spaces, has double defense against air attacks, and can detect Submarines.


--Airship (Nanotechnology):
Cost:   200     Movement(Range):  8(24)
Attack:  16     Firepower:        2
Defend:  12     Hitpoints:        4
-An Airship is made of ultra-light materials that are stronger than steel, and
floats by maintaining a vacuum chamber.  Just as hot air is lighter than cool
air, void is lighter than atmosphere.  The Battleship of the sky, an Airship is
capable of remaining in the field for up to 24 turns before returning to a city
or airbase for maintenance.  It can see 2 spaces and is able to attack other air
units.  Ideal for city bombardment; crucial for defense against other airships.


--Glider (Aerodynamics):

-Gliders are light airborn troops useful for reconnosance and surveilance.  They
can be transported by Aircraft Carriers and by Submarines.  They are capable of
paradrops to land locations, can see 2 spaces, and are able to detect Submarines.
