Reality Check Patch: New Rules, New Units, New Technologies and a New Government
For use with Civilization II ver 2.42 or higher
Release 1.00	February 8, 1999

Author by BKT

What does the Reality Check Patch do?
A whole bunch of stuff: First off, Fundamentalism has been removed from the game
entirely. In its place, is the new Fascist Government (This is the work of Steve Strayer who
created the Fascist patch, the only version of Civ II that I truly enjoyed and therefor chose to
serve as the foundation of my own MOD). The tech tree has also been massively overhauled inorder
to make the game historicly accurate and more realistic. New technologies have been added and
a few technologies have been either replaced or removed. Some preexisting technologies are
now tied to different prerequistes in order to make the game more accurate. With new
technologies come new Units, most of which focus on apsects of modern warfare that were
(in my opion) not adequately represented in the origonal game. The choice of opponent
Civilizations has been altered slightly with the addition of Iraq as a rival civilization
complete with cities (the Persians have been deleted to accomodate this addition). Finally, the
"Cosmic Principles" in the rules file have been slightly tweaked.

Autors Notes:
You MUST have version 2.42 for this patch to work. I suppose it could work with other
versions, but I have only tested it on version 2.42 (which means stuff probably won't work like
I intened it to). Also, do not attempt to use game saves created without the patch--they
will be more than a little screwed up seeing as how the tech tree has been drasticly modifed,
new units have been added, and the opponent civilizations reconfigured. Right now the patch
only supports Civilization II plain flavor, and Civilization II with Fantastic Worlds (seeing
as how these are the only two versions of Civ II that I own and thus modify correctly). If there
is enough intrest in the Reality Check Patch (and I hope there will be) I will add support for
Civ II Gold (actually, I don't know what needs to be changed for Civ II Gold, so it may work
perfectly as is--but I doubt it). If you have Civ II Gold and would like to help me make this
patch compatible with it please contact me, at Slider335@aol.com

Files Included:
	Units.bmp	Rules.txt	Custom1.wav
	Cities.bmp	Pedia.txt	Custom2.wav
	Terrain1.bmp	Labels.txt	Extra1.wav
			Game.txt
			fwLabels.txt
			fwGame.txt
			City.txt

Installation:
There are two ways to install, those of you without the Fantastic Worlds Addon will want
to follow method I. If you have the Fantastic Worlds Addon, follow method II.

Method I:
Create a new folder in your Civ II directory and call it 'Origional Game Files.' Move
the following files into that directory: Units.gif, Cities.gif, Terrain1.gif, Rules.txt,
Pedia.txt, Labels.txt, Game.txt, and City.txt. Move their counterpart mod files and this file
into the main Civ II folder. Next move Custom1.wav, Custom2.wav, and Extra1.wav into the Civ II
'Sounds' folder. DELETE the fwLabels.txt and fwGame.txt files included in the zip. (They are
only needed if you are using the Fantastic Worlds addon.) That's it! You're done. REMEMBER, it
really is't a good idea to use old save files with the patch.

Method II:
Create a folder named 'Reality' in Civ II's 'Scenario' subfolder. Move all of the
files included in this zip except Labels.txt and Game.txt to that directory. DELETE the
Labels.txt file and Game.txt file included in this zip (they aren't needed if you have the
Fantastic Worlds Addon). In the 'Reality' folder, create a new folder entitled 'Sound' and
move all three of the included .Wav files into it. Now rename the fwLabels.txt and fwGame.txt
files to 'Labels' and 'Game' They sould now have the same name as the two files you deleted
earlier.

Now it gets a little tricky. To start a new game using this patch, backup the Rules.txt file
in your main Civ II directory, COPY the Rules.txt file from the 'Reality' folder into the main
directory, and run Civ II to setup your new game as desired Selecting Map size, # of opponents,
etc. When the game starts, IMMEDIATELY save and exit. Enter the main CIV II directory
and move the save file you just created to the 'Reality' folder. (Also remember to put the
origional Rules.txt file back into the main Civ II directoty.) You can then access that
game save by selecting it with the Load Game option on the main Civ II menu. Whenever you start
that save file, the Reality Check Patch files will automaticlly be used without affecting the
origional game files.

ATTENTION BOTH METHOD USERS!!! Important Installation Note:

The introduction of new units creates a bit of a problem with the Civelopedia. To remedy
this situation, go into the 'Pedia' directory and create a new folder named 'Not for Real'.
Highlight the file named 'Get Info,' select cut from the Edit menu, and then paste the file into
the 'Not for Real' folder (again using the edit menu). Now all the new units and techs, as well
as the Fascist government data appear in the Civilopedia. When you want to use the default game
files again or perhaps another mod/patch, simply put the 'Get Info' file back into the 'Pedia'
diretory the same way that you removed it.

What's New?

Version 1.00:____________________________________________________________________________________

Technologies:
	1. The tech tree has been reconfigured.
	2. addtion of:
		a. Basic Training
		b. Advanced Armor
		c. Sattelite Systems
		d. Spy Satellite
		e. Advanced Rocetry
		f. Jet Engine
		g. Fascisim (not really 'added' as it simply replaced Fundamentalism)

Units:
	1. The icons of most preexisting units have been changed.
	2. A couple of units have been slightly modifed.
	   The most important changes are:
a: Cruise and nuclear missles have seen their ranges reduced to 8. This is to
accomodate the introduction of ICBMs (Intercontinental Balistic Missles) with
		   the advent of Advanced Rocketry.
b: The Stealth Bomber has been offensively strengthened and can now stay in the
air for two turns before crashing (it will crash if not returned to a friendly
city/airbase/carrier by the end of its third turn in the air).
c: The Stealth Fighter has been offensively strengthened and will now stay in the
air for one turn before crashing (it will crash if not returned to a friendly
city/airbase/carrier by the end of its second turn in the air). It is
intended to be used as an offensive unit.
	3. addition of:
		a. Nuclear ICMB--a long range nuclear missle
		b. Conventional ICBM--a long range cruise missle
		c. Spy Sattelite--range of twenty, ignores zones of control, two space
visibility, must return to a friendly city/airbase/carrier by the end of its
fifth turn in the air or it will crash, CANNOT attack enemy units.
		d. Heavy Tank--an stronger version of the Tank unit
		e. Jet Fighter--this is basicly the same as the Stealth Fighter unit that shipped
with the game except its hitpoints have been increased to 30 (from twenty).
It is intended to be used as a defensive unit because of its limited range and
		   increased hitpoints.
		f. Storm Trooper (replaces the fanatic unit)--can only be created by Fascist
governments, requires no support at all from Fascist Governments.
NOTE: this unit comes directly from Steve Strayer's Fascist Patch.

Rules:
	1. Roads now require 1/5 of a movement point (they origionally required 3).
	2. It now takes 12 turns to irrigate/mine Swamp and Jungle terrain. (They origionally
	   took 15 turns to irrigate/mine.)
	3. Oil resources now yield 3 trade arrows in addtion to 4 shileds.
	4. Fascisist and Communist governments can support 5 units before having to pay
mantinence. (Fascist Stormtroopers do not count toward that total.
	5. Fascism loses only 30% of science (Down from 50% for Fundamentalism)
	6. The abbreviations for unit commands have benn changed to make them a little more clear.
	   They are now:
				Fortify, d
				Fortified, D
				Sleep, s
				Build Fortress, f
				Build Road, r
				Build Irrigation, i
				Build Mine, m
				Transform, t
				Clean Pollution, P
				Build Airbase, a
				Go to, g

	7. The Iraqi civilization has been added. (They replace the Persian civilizatoin.)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________

IMPORTANT: The rulers, titles, colors, and personalities of some civilizations have been
changed. Addtionally, the addtion of the Iraqi civilization required some shuffling
to make the herald anamations seen in negotiations fit their respective nations.
The MOD has been designed for play as the United States with the following opponents:
		1. Russia
		2. Japan
		3. Germany
		4. Iraq
		5. England
		6. China
The personalities of the nations have been calibrated to balance out when these
nations are seleced (choose Customize Rules, Select Computer Opponents when
starting the game). All nations are selectable, but the personalities of the above
nations are the only ones calibrated to be both accurtae and complimentary.

The patch is still highly playable if you choose to play as a nation other than the
United States. However, the American and Egyptain heralds have been switched to
accomodate the introduction of the Iraqi civilization. (Of course, if you avoid the
United States and Egypt all together you won't notice any difference.)

Credits:
This patch is based heavily on the Fascist Patch autored by Steve Strayer. He deserves a
whole bunch of credit as far as this patch goes. I would also like to thank food, air, and water
for with out them none of this would have ever been possible.

Questions, Comments:
My email is Slider335@aol.comI will gladly answer any questions regarding the Reality
Check Patch. Any additional feedback or suggestions will also be appreciated. I would very
much appreciate it if you anyone who uses the Reality Check Patch to drop me an email just so
that I could gauge others intrest in my work. I

Copy Right and Distrobution Stuff:
This patch may be freely distibuted across the net by so long as all contents of
the zip file are intact and unmodified. Considering that this patch is a derivative of
someone elses work, I would be a bit of a hypocrite if I didn't allow other people to use it as
a foundation for their own mod or patch. If you make any changes to this patch and then choose
to distribute it, please give credit to Steve Strayer as well as myself. I would also appreciate
it if you would email me a copy of the patch so I can see what direction you decided to take it
in.

					ENJOY!!!
