The Guns of the South
Scenario by Cat Crockett, 1999

This scenario, unlike most Civil War scenarios, takes place after the War Between the States has already closed. It explores what might have happened if the Southern states had managed to beat back the Union forces in a series of decisive victories, aided by a new technology unlike anything North America had seen before.

Now that you have this unzipped, this scenario should work without having to make any backups. I didn't change any of the rules files, and the introduction box is its own file specific to this scenario.

I based this scenario on Harry Turtledove's alternate history novel, The Guns of the South. In the closing months of the war, General Lee's forces are battered and bruised, and many are beginning to see an inevitable end in defeat. Just when all seems lost, a group of mysterious soldiers from a faraway land appear and hand General Lee the key to winning the war. It turns out that the men are Afrikaner dissidents from post-Apartheid South Africa who have managed to build a time machine and can supply Lee with a startling new weapon. That weapon is the AK-47. Armed with this new technology, the South defeats the North.

In my alternate history scenario, the Confederacy has already won the war, but much of her infrastructure lays in ruins. She has come to an agreeable peace with the Union, but this peace has spawned unforseen consequences. The Pacific states of California and Oregon, and the territory of Alaska, have broken away from the Union and set up a Pacific state distinct from its eastern bretheren. In addition, the Mormons, long brooding in their Utah cities, have once again risen in open revolt, but this time they have the strength to inflict serious damage. The Plains Indians have loosely united under Sitting Bull, and must either come to terms with their neighbours or face certain extinction. Finally, the nations of Great Britain, in the guise of Canada, and Mexico have both made peace with the Confederacy, which irked the North during the war and led to a deterioration of relationships with the two nations. For my own history of these events see the file gunshist.txt

Though I based the nations partly on Turtledove's book and partly on my own historical knowledge, I apologise beforehand for inaccuracies which may be present. My knowledge of Mexican and Canadian history during the 1860s is sketchy at best, and three nations had to be created entirely from speculation, these being the Pacific Democracy, the Plains Indians, and the Mormon Theocracy.

I chose the units used for a couple of reasons. First, I didn't want to heavily alter the game, so existing units seemed the most logical decision. Second, I wanted the units to roughly correspond with real life attack values, but without complicating the issue with new units. Thus, the AK-47 units in the Confederacy are represented by Marine units, while the larger ships are represented by the frigate. Many sailing ships still plied the seas, and the pairing of the older frigates (notice that they are all veterans) with the newer ironclad makes sense. I deemed the destroyer too advanced for 1865. I chose fanatics to comprise the entire Mormon army due to their nastiness and the ease in which a large army can be built with no support clause. In addition, the Mormon religion, while nowhere near as nasty as my insurgants, has at times been in open conflict with the United States over its religious doctrine. Most troublesome from a creative standpoint was the Plains Indians. I deliberately avoided including displaced eastern tribes (some of whom actually supported the South, hence the inclusion of the Indian Territory among southern cities) and Pacific Northwestern indians due to cultural difference. I tried to recreate a horse-based culture; Sitting Bull has at his disposal both Veteran Dragoon units and Cavelry, but no Riflemen. I chose instead to substitute Partisans as defensive units for the cities, and they are available for use as offensive fighters should the desire arise.

Remember, its just a scenario, so don't take me too seriously. I'm well aware of the racial issues inherent in this scenario which have been almost completely ignored in favour of politics. I hope you enjoy it!
