The Athenians have emerged from the Persian invasions as the great power
of the Greek Peninsula. In the fifty years following the defeat of
Xerxes, Athens solidified its colonial empire in the Aegean and Asia Minor,
flourished in the arts and philosophy, and strengthened its naval prowess.
However, with growing rivalries between the other Greek city-states coming to
a head, it was only a matter of time before war broke out again in the Greek
peninsula. Corinth, trying to build a colonial empire of her own, has her first
major dispute with Athens over the colony of Kerkyra, and then again with Potidaea,
both times the Athenian government, headed by Pericles, supporting revolts
in those cities against Corinth. Joining in with other city-states in their
grievances with Athenian hegemony, the Corinthians appeal to the aging King
Archidamos, the ruler of Sparta. Archidamos makes his fateful decision: The
thirty year peace must be broken--Athenian power must be checked. The Greeks
march off to war...
