Although bombs and rockets were used by the Chinese from the 8th century on, true firearms awaited the introduction of gunpowder to Europe. By the 1300's, the forerunners to the modern rifle were in use from England to Poland. Most of these early weapons were inefficient, although frightening to the enemy. Most required an actual match to be placed on the powder for them to work -- dangerous business! Although their use was usually limited to windless, dry days, their use was effective and (with some major improvements) has continued to this day.
