Romanticism was a 19th century art movement that was primarily a backlash from the Humanism of the previous century. Affecting music, literature, and painting, Romanticism was meant as a return to Eden; back to a mythic past in which man and nature were seen as one. Individualism and the intrinsic goodness of humankind sought to replace the reason and intellect in artistic expression, in juxtaposition to the opposite movement taking place in science as the Industrial Revolution. Romanticism was eventually supplanted by the Impressionists.
