Listed as one of the seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Colossus at Rhodes was completed by the sculptor Chares in 282 B.C.E. after twelve years of labor. A gigantic statue of the god Helios, it was said to be 110 feet high and fashioned of bronze with a white marble base. Located at the harbor of the city of Rhodes in Greece, it didn't last long; it was destroyed by an earthquake in 226 B.C.E. Even as a ruin, however, the statue was a Wonder to behold for nearly 1,000 years until sold as scrap metal.
