WW2 EUROPE UNITS, VERSION 1.0
							by Harlan Thompson

64 new units for you to play around with! These units are not part of any scenario (yet), but may help you in making yours. Included are the minimum number of files to get these units to show up in the game- Units.txt, gl_str.txt, SpriteID.txt, etc... The numbers and abilities in the Units.txt file are meaningless though, just place holders. All the graphic files needed are in here, including the Great Library graphics, production menu graphics, cheat menu graphics, and so on. There are no Great Library text files however but they will be added at a later date. A galleon has been added to this pack as a bonus unit.

These files are the first step in my process of making a WW2 Europe scenario. There will be at least 20 additional units added to this later on. Most of the remainder will be either bombers or people units. Stormtroopers, Paratroopers, Marines, basic infantry types, Lancaster bombers, B-29s and the like will be included later, hopefully.

NOTES

The graphics are mostly "life-size", meaning bigger objects in real life are bigger images in this collection. I say mostly because a) this only works within each domain. You cannot compare naval unit sizes with ground unit sizes for instance (a battleship would take up dozens of squares!). And b) some units I had to fudge a bit to prevent the graphic from becoming too large. For instance, a bomber like the B-17 Flying Fortress would be even bigger compared to most planes in real life. I had to reduce it and a few other bombers a bit, and a few of the largest naval boats (Carrier, Battle Cruiser and Battleship) were reduced a bit as well. Some units still poke into adjoining squares despite this reduction, I hope you don't mind.

If you know much about WW2, you may be scratching your head over some of the unit types I've included here. A V-2 Missile or a Sherman Tank, you say, okay I understand that, but what the heck is a Wasserfall SAM or a Do-335 Fighter? In the WW2 scenario I am making, I wanted to include not only the major weapons used in WW2, but also the "what-if" weapons that might have been used had history turned out differently. So if you see something you don't know, its probably one of those. I will eventually explain all of these choices when the Great Library text files are made. The choices I've made have been very thoroughly researched and thought out.

Some of these WW2 units had the same names as original CTP units. In those cases I have added (CTP) or (WW2) to the names to make it easier to tell which units are original CTP units and which units are WW2 units.

INSTALLATION

Install the official second patch first. You can then unzip all files from this zip file into the directory where you installed CTP. The directory sctructure is included in the zip file, so all files will be placed in their proper direcories. The text files and the sprite (.spr) files are in the scenario directories, but .tga files are not read when they are in the scenario directories. The .tga files are unzipped into the ...\ctp_data\default\graphics\pictures folder.

You can now start a new game of CTP, click on select scenario in the new single player game screen and select Harlan Thompson's WW2 units. This will give you access to the new units.

DISCLAIMER

Feel free to use any of the units in the file for your own game making purposes. Please include a credit in the readme file, and do not use this for any for-profit purposes. If you are making a general WW2 Europe scenario please contact me directly first, though. I don't want these used for a scenario that will be nearly exactly like mine.

In addition to WW2 specific scenarios, I think many of the units would work well in scenarios dealing with the modern era generally. You may also wish to replace Activision's official graphics with these in some cases. Personally I don't think some of the units they've made are very accurate, for instance the Fascist in the orange jumpsuit (what's that a historical reference of???).

CREDITS

The vast majority of these images were "liberated" from various sources on the web or from other computer games. Too many sources to mention really. Then these images were processed and tinkered with until they looked up to snuff. In many cases this meant virtual every pixel was changed before I was done. So I feel this is basically an original work, though it has its origins in copied items. The only other person to help directly with the artwork was Tom Davies, who made most of the Me262 (I added the German insignia and made a few other tweaks).

There were quite a few people who helped me out in other ways, however. DOGFISH (a.k.a. Jim Hair) provided numerous graphics from all over and helped with feedback. When I say numerous, I do mean numerous! Joakim Nygren helped a ton in getting images too. Paul van den Belt helped check the files for errors. I have also gotten a good amount of advice on which units to include and which ones not to. Ricky Law was very helpful on this, for instance. Any number of folks at the Apolyton Creation forum board helped when there were technical questions to be answered.

Much of what I've learned or taken comes directly from the web. When I finish the final version, I hope to post a list of interesting websites I've used. Questions or comments please direct to: harlant@earthlink.net.

Enjoy.
