RED AND BROWN BALTIC
Version 1.0 (3/2/97)

THE PLAYERS

White Finns - Finland's liberal democratic faction, led by the war
hero Carl Gustav Mannerheim. After WW1, Finland gained independence.
Almost immediately, a Soviet-backed Communist revolution took place.
The Reds managed to seize the southeast of Finland, areas containing
the capital and most of the industry. It took almost a year of hard
fighting before Mannerheim and the Whites drove the Reds out. Can you
unify Finland?
In the long term, some parts of Karjala (eastern Finland) just
happen to be in Russian hands. Will you risk war with the USSR and
incorporation as a Soviet Republic to create a Greater Finland?
Even more farfetched - perhaps the border with Sweden needs to be
readjusted. And Estonia is *really* a Finnish nation...

Red Finns - The Communist Party in Finland. Just as in World War
Two, Finland's Communists are lead by Otto Kuusinen and backed by
the Soviet Army. Can you lead the proletariat to victory over the
capitalist and fascist forces of Finland's so-called 'democratic'
government? More importantly, can you fend off the Freikorps, who
are prepared to install a German prince as the King of Finland?
In the long term, carry on the Revolution! Liberate the workers
of Scandinavia from their monarchist shackles!

Freikorps - a collection of ultra-right wing German paramilitary
groups, the Freikorps seek to make Germany *the* Baltic power, destroy
the Communist regime in Russia, conquer the southern provinces of
Denmark, and install a friendly monarchy in Finland.
In the long term, Denmark really doesn't need to exist as anything
other than a province of Germany. Likewise with Lithuania, Latvia,
and Estonia. As for Norway and Sweden, who knows? Maybe that Austrian
corporal is right about a 'Germanic Empire'...

Bolsheviks - Russian Communists, recently victorious over the
Czarist and moderate Communist forces in NW Russia. Support the
Finnish communists and make sure the fascist Freikorps don't expand
too far.
In the long term, ensure the Hammer and Sickle flies over every
Baltic city, from Petrograd to Hamburg. Crush the oppressive regimes
in Scandinavia and Germany. Guide the Finnish communist regime, but
make sure they don't get too powerful.

Sweden - a strong, stable constitutional monarchy, Sweden was
staunchly neutral throughout the period. None of its direct neighbors
posed any threat, especially after the Finnish communists were
defeated. Can you keep Sweden out of war?
In the long term, the status quo suits Sweden just fine. It would
be far better if the Communists and Freikorps were defeated, but what
happens in southern Finland and Denmark isn't really that important,
right?

Norway - a relatively young nation, Norway only became independent
in 1905. The seperation from Sweden was bloodless, thankfully, but
there are some latent hostilities over the exact border. Norway was
also able to stay neutral until Germany invaded in 1940. Can you
do the same?
In the long term, making sure the Freikorps don't annihilate
Denmark is a very good idea. So is staying on friendly terms with
Sweden, at least until you're ready to readjust the borders to
something more natural.

Denmark - a small, agrarian monarchy, Denmark was another neutral
monarchy. It had a stable foreign policy and no internal crises.
That's no fun, of course, so the Freikorps will show up and demand
that all of Schleswig-Holstein (Kolding and Esbjerg on the map) be
returned. Pray they stop there.
In the long term, staying alive is the big issue. Denmark is not
an easily defensible country, so keep a strong military and hope that
you don't have to flee to the Faeroe Islands. If you're lucky,
you can take a nationalist turn and try to seize Kiel and maybe
even southern Sweden. It all used to be part of the Danish Empire,
after all, and everyone was happier back then...

NOTES - this scenario is heavily orientated towards war. If you're
anyone other than Sweden or Norway, expect to be fighting up until
the very last turn. At the start of the scenario, only the Freikorps
and Bolsheviks have anything other than weak Militias guarding
each city, so be careful not to charge everyone in sight and find
out that those Freikorp machine guns mean business.
Have fun! I apologize for any historical/geographic mixups. Let me
know if you spot anything in particular that needs fixing. Either
create a new subdirectory in your Scenario directory or back up
your rules.txt, units.gif, cities.gif and city.txt files before
you play.
