^
^Upon the fall of Communism, Russia, the dowager of the old empire, awoke to
^find herself surrounded by thirteen new countries -- nations born with the
^painful memories of Soviet rule and bright promises of democracy and self-
^determination. The tale of the Baltic and European republics are already
^well-known in the West; and now the ancient lands of the Caucusus and
^Central Asia are poised to write their own destinies.
^
^Each nation possesses a rich heritage of Christian or Muslim traditions,
^long supressed by their former masters in Moscow. And the world's eyes
^are just beginning to grasp the true extent of the petroleum reserves
^locked beneath the towering mountains and arid plains of the region.
^
^Will Russia allow the vast wealth on its newly exposed southern border to
^be snapped up by the covetous West? Will Iran, thrust into the role of
^regional superpower, extend the influence of Islam to new converts? And
^will the new nations be able to resist the overtures of more powerful
^neighbors to retain full independence?
