^On January 20, 1998 the unthinkable happened. As Clinton gave his State
of the Union Address, a nuclear device detonated somewhere in the District
of Columbia. The device destroyed the Capitol and with it most of the
government.
^Earlier that day, Senator Strom Thurmond, 93 years young, suffered what
was reported as a massive heart attack. He remained in a South Carolina
hospital at the time of the explosion. When the device detonated, Thurmond
became the highest ranking official of the United States Government alive.
Thurmond's spokesman released a statement that read as follows: "President
Thurmond is exhausted, but in full control of his faculties. He is in
perfect mental health and will take the oath of office later today."
Thurmond remained hidden for days and rumors began that he was incapacitated
or worse.
^On January 23, CNN reported that Thurmond suffered a stroke and would not
recover. Thurmond's spokesman denied the report, but several groups
demanded proof. Thurmond's spokesman released a speech that he said
"was given by the new President to his staff earlier this morning". When
CNN announced that the speech was one given by Thurmond years earlier, and not
a recent one, the factions decided that Thurmond was no longer fit to preside.
Three groups claimed control of the government and the result is for you
to decide. -author: Jason Westin <jaywestn@grove.ufl.edu>
