In 1075 the massive European nations decided that they were bored.
So Pope Urban II declared that the Romans needed to expand their territory
to include the Holy Lands. After a brief war with the Muslims of the Middle
East, latter called the crusades, the rest of Europe decided they wanted
a piece of the action, namely France and England. The French and Romans went
straight for the Turkish Muslims, and the English went after the Syrians. After
the war lasted almost 270 years, the Europeans decided that they should give up,
and went away empty handed. Maybe you can change that, or keep it the same.
