English civil war
-----------------

As you'll probably be used to by now this scenario has its own rules file
and before playing it you are required to copy the ecwrules, ecwunits and ecwcity
files into your Civ2 folder and rename them rules, units and city respectively.
MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP THE ORIGINAL FILES!!!!!!!

In the scenario Cromwell's governments are representedly by slightly altered
vesions of Communism and Fundementalism - Commonwealth (representing the
interregnum up until 1654) and Protectorate (after 1654) respectively. These are
the same as the original forms of government except that there is still some
flat rate corruption under Commonwealth and under a Protectorate you have to
support any units over 5 rather than ten.

Fanatic's have been replaced by infantry units which are similar to fanatics but
have had their defending strength cut to three to stop them
unbalancing the game since it is deliberately highly unlikely that any other
civilization will gain the technology to change government.

Partisans have also been made significantly weaker since if they happen to turn
up they prove to be too strong for the other units.

At the beginning of the scenario all the civilizations have relatively limited
armies, representing the lack of the standing army in Britain at the time.
The nations represented in the scenario are:-

The Roundheads/Parliamentarians
-------------------------------
Under Oliver Cromwell (though historically Cromwell did not become leader until
after the war). At the start of the game research is under way on Protectorate and
Sun Tzu's War Academy is being built in Norwich, in order to represent the New
Model Army - the founding of which was historically the turning point of the war.
As Cromwell your aim should be the total domination of the British isles.

The Cavaliers/Royalists
-----------------------
The supporters of Charles I. Initially they hold most of North England and can make
large gains in the South-West. It's up to you whether to use the troops stationed
in the fortresses around Oxford to attack or to defend the Royalist capital.
Charles' aim is firstly to survive, secondly to defeat Cromwell and in an ideal
world to conquer Ireland and Scotland as well.

The Scottish Covenanters
------------------------
Signatories of the 1638 covenant against the King's imposition of the English
liturgy - at the beginning o the war they allied with the roundheads against Charles.
Historically the Scots later allied with Charles against Parliament though in this
scenario it is up to you - take what you can get.

Irish Catholics
---------------
Irish Catholics rebelled in 1641 and sent troops to support Charles in the East
Midlands. After Cromwell's victory he brutally but down the rebellion. As Ireland
again it is up you - try to take advantage of the situation by exploiting any weakness
on either side - or just stand asid and build up your strength in order to maintain
your independence.

The Levellers
-------------
There is a reasonably high level of barbarian activity in this scenario, representing
the uprises of the Levellers - proto-Socialist troops within the New Model Army.
