In 1999, internation terrotists detonaded a crude nuclear device in the Persian Gulf. The destruction was complete, and the damage irreversible; within days, the major source of Western oil seeped in the desert, and was gone. Global panic ensued; and emergency summit meeting was held. World leaders, unable to reseolve the ongoing threat of terrorism, concentrated on the immediate threat of dwindling energy reserves. Alternative fuel sources were developed rapidly, along with numerous other technolgies. The most important of these new technologies was the SDI defense system, which each of the worlds powers were secretly developing, which rendered missiles and large aircraft ineffective. Unfortunately, the United States, holding the world's largest stock and variety of natural resources, underestimated the level of the foriegn technologies and had reduced it's naval and ground forces to a minimum.
It took ten years and several short wars, and the United Nations had collapsed, and the balance of power had shifted away from America. New political boundaries were drawn; new alliances formed. Asian and Pacific nations allied in the Orient, and the Central and South American countries formed a federation that was politically hostile towards the U.S. Europe, now completely dominated by the resurgence of Communism, plotted a 3-way attack on the U.S. In 2009, unprepared and without allies, the U.S. is challeged to defend itself against three enemies, from three directions; Canada, by remaining neutral, mercifully prevented an attack from the North.
