This scenario is an attempt to recreate the European Middle Ages, not in exactness
but in feel. All the game powers were not necessarily flourishing at the same time,
but they represent some of the major powers and influences in Europe between 476 and
1350 AD. The Byzantine Greeks are the remnant of the once mighty Roman Empire, but
during this period they are on the decline, and much of their empire, power and
influence are being usurped by the rising Muslims in the south. The Muslims have
stretched so far that they are beginning to threaten the Franks on their southern
border. The Franks are allied with the Catholic Church, but are beginning to have
trouble in the north as well, with the rising Saxon power in Frisia and the Jutland
peninsula. Some of these Saxons have migrated to the island of Britain where they
are taking over where the Celts once ruled. The Celts are not a military force to
be reckoned with, but are rather an intellectual power. All these people will
eventually feel the wrath of the Northmen, still huddled on the southern shores of
Scandinavia, but ready to strike out into the unknown in their superior sailing
ships. Who will rise to power and greatness in this world? Only time will tell.
