TEXT
^After a nine-month siege, the Celtiberian city of Numantia is
forced by hunger to capitulate in 133 BC to the Roman troops of
Publius Cornelius Scipio. When Scipio insisted on unconditional
surrender, the Numantians killed themselves after burning the city
down. The destruction of Numantia meant the end of all organized
 resistance to Rome in Spain.

^In 711 AD a contingent of Arabs and Berbers invades Iberia
from Africa. Except for a small strip in the North-Northwest,
the whole peninsula is conquered and occupied in less than ten
years. The invaders establish the Emirate, later Caliphate, of
Al-Andalus which will dictate the pace of progress in Europe
 for several centuries.

^In 1519, Hernn Corts begins the conquest of Mexico, which will
be completed in only two years. Aside from the methods employed,
the campaign of Corts and the one by Francisco Pizarro against
the Incas (1530-1535) rank among the most impressive military feats
 of all time.

^In 1580 Philip II incorporates Portugal and its overseas territories
to the Crown of Spain. Philip II, on whose possessions the sun never
sets, rules now over almost one third of the world. The Spanish Empire
is, at its highest peak, the largest the world will ever know. The
Spanish-Portuguese union will not last for long. In 1640, Portugal and
its colonies regain independence. A notable exception is the North
African city of Ceuta that, Portuguese in origin, remains loyal to Spain.

^The assassination of Mary, Queen of Scots, together with the
unchecked piracy of English sea captains decides Felipe II
to plan the invasion of England. The "Invincible Armada",
composed of 130 vessels carrying over 18,000 men, is fitted out
and ready to sail in 1588. Due to incompetent leadership, very
adverse climatic conditions, and superior seamanship of the
English, the expedition ends in disaster. Despite such a major
drawback, Spain's military power resented little; mostly the harm
was done on the moral of the Spaniards who, for the first time,
 realize they are not unbeatable.

^Carlos II, the last Habsburg king, dies in 1700 without a heir
and gives the Crown in his will to Philip of Anjou, grandson of
king Louis XIV of France. The latter proclaims Philip king of
Spain and declares that France and Spain should be united. This
is unacceptable for the other European powers and a Grand Alliance
is formed amongst Britain, the Netherlands, Prussia and Austria to
make Archduke Charles of Austria the king of Spain. War breaks out
in 1702. In 1713, under the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht,
hostilities come to an end and Philip of Anjou becomes king of Spain
on the condition that Spain and France will never be united. As a
consequence of the so-called War of Spanish Succession, Spain losses
control of Gibraltar, which passes onto British hands in 1704.
Gibraltar is today a matter of bitter dispute between Spain and Great
 Britain.

^Napoleon invades Spain in 1808 and occupies its capital, Madrid.
Joseph, Napoleon's brother, is proclaimed King of Spain. Spontaneous
popular revolts and fierce guerrillas hit back and tie up French
forces. This way commences the sanguinary Peninsular War, known
in Spain as the War for Independence.

^1898 is the "Year of Disaster". As a result of the Spanish-
American War, Spain loses its last possessions in the
American continent, Cuba and Puerto Rico. The Philippines and
Guam are lost as well. After almost 400 years, the Spanish
Colonial Empire comes to an end.

^In the dawn of July 17, 1936, Fascists revolt against the
legitimate government of Spain. A civil war breaks out,
bringing the darkest period of Spain's history. After
three years of combat, more than one million dead people and a
country razed to the ground, General Franco emerges victorious
and establishes a fascist dictatorship that will last until his
death in 1975. Why was Franco's regime tolerated by the
 WWII-winning allies?
