The First World War ---
JUNE 28 1914 - Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne is assassinated at Sarajevo by a Serbian nationalist. One month later, after its ultimatum to Serbia is rejected, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia, with German encouragement. After Russia refuses to cease its mobilization against Austria-Hungary, Germany declares war on Russia, then on France. After Germany makes it clear that she will not respect Belgium's neutrality, Great Britain declares war on Germany. Germany's ally, Turkey later joins the war, while Italy, another of Germany's allies, decides to remain neutral - at first. Thus in August 1914, Europe is divided into two belligerent camps, the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey) against the Allies and their associates (Britain, France, Russia, and later, the US)
