431 B.C. marked the resumption on a greater scale of the war between Athens
and the Peloponnesians that had been ongoing since 460 B.C. However, this
war, unlike the others, began with a large invasion into Attica itself
by the Spartans (the intricate diplomacy between Sparta, Corinth, Megara,
and other allies has been simplified in this game by their inclusion under
Spartan control). The Spartans also are tenuous allies with the Thebans who
continue hostilities with Athens. Athens has driven out the Aeginetans
from their island and rules the Saronic Gulf, and are close allies with the
Euboeans. Argos is a neutral wild card here. Situation: The allied city of
Plataea is about to destroy a small vanguard of Thebans that had been
isolated from their main army. This Theban action takes place along with a
Spartan invasion, heading into Attica. The Ath. navy is heading to attack
axis coastal cities. Athens must push Spartans out of Attica and try to
destroy their power in the Isthmus with Corinth and the other cities.
