ARTHUR OF THE BRITONS
SCENARIO NOTES

This scenario is based on the mytho-historical figure of Arthur, Lord of the Britons and King of
the ancient land of Logres. It is *not* intended to be historically accurate or to follow any
particular Arthurian legend. In this scenario, Arthur's quest is to unify the entire British
Isles within 100 years. His main enemy in this endeavour are the Fey, who represent his various
legendary opponents - Morgan le Fey, Mordred, the Green Knight and so on.

CIV2 VERSION REQUIRED

'Arthur of the Britons' is designed for Civilization II version 2.42 or above. It will not work
correctly with earlier versions. Remember that you can download a patch to upgrade your
version of Civilization II from many sites on the World Wide Web.

-------------------
PLAYING LEVEL

This is a hard scenario even on the easier game levels. We recommend a difficulty
setting of no higher than Prince, at least for your first few games.

-------------------
NOTE ON SOUNDS

Because some of the custom units in this game replace existing units, you will sometimes
encounter strange sound effects (e.g. Merlin the Magician will produce machine-gun sounds
when attacking).

The scenario files include a DOS batch file to address this problem, but this will only work if
the scenario is installed in the scenario subdirectory as recommended. From a DOS prompt,
change to the scenario's directory (by typing CD \MPS\CIV2\SCENARIO\ARTHUR, for example),
then type SOUNDFIX. This will execute the batch file and copy swordfighting noises over the
strange sound effects. Type EXIT to return to Windows. This procedure will not affect your
normal Civ2 game's operations.

-------------------
THE TRIBES

There are seven tribes in the game:

The BRITONS are ruled by Arthur and the main protagonists of the scenario. They have a number of
unique and powerful units. Only the Britons and the Fey have access to the powerful Knights units
in the scenario (see below). The Britons have very poor relations with the Fey (for obvious
reasons) and the Saxons. The Britons gain a special bonus if they succeed in capturing the
Grail Castle, capital of the Fey.

The FEY encapsulate the legendary opponents of Arthur. As well as Sir Mordred, they are aided
by the Fisher King, keeper of the Grail, the Green Knight and the eerie Questing Beast. These
powerful units make them by far the most difficult opponent in the scenario. Together with the
Britons, they are able to develop the various Knight units. The Fey have a deep-rooted hatred of
the Britons. The Fey gain a special bonus if they succeed in capturing Camelot.

The SAXONS are recent invaders of Britain, and seek to conquer it for themselves. Like all the
tribes in the scenario apart from the Britons and the Fey, they have a relatively low level of
technology. According to some legends, the Saxons were responsible for the death of Arthur's
father, Uther Pendragon, and so there is considerable animosity between the Britons and Saxons.

The ANGLES are a closely related tribe to the Saxons. They have similar technology, and cordial
relations with this tribe. Historically, the Saxons and Angles were victorious in this
scenario, and England takes its name from this tribe.

The JUTES are a third invading force, similar in many ways to the Saxons and Angles. They have
relatively cordial relations with both of these tribes at the beginning of the scenario.

The SCOTS and IRISH represent the native tribes of Britain. Historically, at the time this
scenario is set, the Scots were actually Irish in origin, but to avoid confusion we have placed
the Scots in Scotland and the Irish in Ireland. Both have a similar celtic origin, so relations
between them are relatively positive.

NEW UNITS

There are quite a number of new or adapted units in the game, as explained below:

A BATTERING RAM replaces the Catapult unit, and functions in exactly the same way.
Required Technology: Mathematics.

The FISHER KING is the keeper and guardian of the Grail. He may not attack another unit or
city, but his mysterious arts grant him extremely strong defensive power. The Fisher King is
a unique unit of the Fey - once he has been lost, he cannot be replaced.

FOOTSOLDIERS replace the Legion unit, to which they are identical.
Required Technology: Iron Working.

A GRAIL KNIGHT can be constructed by either the Britons or the Fey once they have achieved the
requisite advance. Grail Knights are extremely powerful units that will not normally appear
until very late in the scenario, if at all.
Required Technology: Grail Lore.

The GREEN KNIGHT is a fearsome swordsman whose origins are shrouded in mystery. He has
considerable attacking strength, but his most valuable asset is his magical defensive
ability. The Green Knight is a unique unit of the Fey - once lost, he cannot be replaced.

GUARDSMEN are identical in every way to the Phalanx unit, which they replace.
Required Technology: Bronze Working.

The KNIGHT unit is just as it appears in a normal game, except that in this scenario, it can
only be produced by the Britons and the Fey.

A KNIGHT OF QUALITY unit is an improved Knight unit that can only be produced by the Britons and
Fey.
Required Technology: Higher Chivalry.

A KNIGHT OF RENOWN is even further advanced than a Knight of Quality, representing any of the
famous knights of Arthurian legend. Knights of Renown can only be produced by the Britons and
the Fey.
Required Technology: Advanced Chivalry.

MERLIN is Arthur's magical advisor. He is weak as a military unit, but his magical arts allow
him to move rapidly, and he has the ability to see further than any other unit, making him
ideal for exploring the islands of Britain. Merlin is a unique unit of the Britons - once
lost, he cannot be replaced.

MERCENARIES represent Germanic or Scandinavian warriors fighting for pay. They are most usually
found among the ranks of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes, although any tribe may hire them once the
requisited technology has been achieved.
Required Technology: Warrior Code.

The MERCHANT unit simply replaces the Caravan of the normal game.
Required Technology: Trade.

The QUESTING BEAST is, according to myth, a strange enchanted creature sent to ravage the
land. In the hands of the Fey, this unique unit will almost certainly do exactly that. The
Questing Beast is a unique unit of the Fey - once killed, it cannot be replaced.

A SAILING BARGE is the Arthurian equivalent of a Trireme unit. While it is similar to a
Trireme in most ways, the Sailing Barge can be navigated across open water without risk of
sinking.
Required Technology: Map Making.

SIR GALAHAD is a mighty knight in the service of Arthur. Together with Sir Lancelot, he
represents one of the most powerful military units in the scenario. Galahad is unique to the
Britons - once killed, he cannot be replaced.

SIR LANCELOT is a very powerful unit - the champion of the Britons and a match for any other
unit in the game. Lancelot is unique to the Britons - once killed, he cannot be replaced.

SIR MORDRED is Arthur's nemesis. This powerful son of Morgan le Fey will prove a doughty
opponent even for Lancelot and Galahad. Mordred is a unique unit of the Fey - once killed,
he cannot be replaced.

-------------------
NEW TECHNOLOGIES

The rate of discovery for new civilization advances has been reduced considerably in this
scenario. There are three new technologies, and one existing technology has been modified.

ADVANCED CHIVALRY requires Chivalry and Higher Chivalry to achieve. It allows the production
of Knight of Renown units.

CHIVALRY operates in just the same way as in the normal game, except that it cannot be
achieved by any tribe apart from the Britons and Fey (who both already possess it at the
beginning of the scenario).

GRAIL LORE requires Advanced Chivalry and Philosophy to achieve. It allows production of the
powerful Grail Knight unit.

HIGHER CHIVALRY requires Chivalry and Iron Working to achieve. It allows the production of
Knight of Quality units.
