The Beginning of Civilization ver 1.0

(Utilize WORD WRAP in notepad!)

Hello. This is my scenario "The Beginnings of Civilization." It is supposed to represent the first farming civilizations and show their interactions. Actually, most of these civs didn't have much interaction, but that'd be no fun for a scenario.

NOTE: Settlers are not intended to be used for creating cities. They are to be used as irrigaters and roadbuilders only. If you do build new cities, they will be named Boston or Quebec. The reason I didn't include a city.txt file is because I wasn't sure of what other cities were around in this time period, esp. for the Indians. I almost erased settlers from the gae completely, but I realized the importance of irrigation and roads for this particluar scenario, since trade is somewhat low and many cities border deserts.

SECOND NOTE: Take the custom.wav files and put them in a new directory called sound in the beginning of civ. directory.

Obviously, dealing with such an ancient and inscrutable period, there is bound to be a few historical inaccuracies with my scenario. I'm gonna come right out and pronounce them to the world.

1) The map that I acquired came from an Arab scenario by Aleksei Andrievski. I thought that China was on this map, but, alas, I was mistaken. So I had to put the Chinese in Mongolia, which kind of screws up the scenario in a way, because they're not near the Yellow River, which is the main reason they exist. It shouldn't hurt the enjoyablity of the scenario though.

2) I have no idea what a lot of these unit are supposed to look like. I looked up in an encyclopedia what kind of weapons they had back then (or around then) and then I just picked out my units. Some of the units (ie: elephants) probably weren't even used by these civs, but they fit in the scenario, so...

3) Some of the cities were so close to each other, like Heliopolis and Giza or Assur and Nineveh, that I had to put them a little off their real position to assure that no city squares would overlap.

4) The Babylonians represent the Sumerian civilizations. There were so many different invasions and civs that I just called them the Babylonians and picked out a few of the best cities from all of the cultures. I chose Nebuchadnezzar as king because he was king when the Hanging Gardens were built. Plus his name is so neat.

5) Like I said earlier, these civs (esp. Chinese) didn't have much interaction between each other. Most interaction was trade. The warfare makes it interesting, though.

Thank you dept.
1) Harlan Thompson for his life-saving ancient units file. Nearly all of my units came from him. If you don't have this file, you need it.

2) As I already mentioned, I got the map from a scenario by Aleksei Andrievski. Thank you very much.

3) Lee Campbell helped me out with Paint Shop Pro. He also went to the free Squirrel Nut Zippers homecoming concert in Carrboro, NC, with me last night, and he's a really great guy.

Thank you very much for getting my scenario, and I hope you enjoy it.
