Sparte, the city of the Spartans, had long ago faded for ever in obscurity. It is impressive that
there is no monument in the city to reveal its ancient past, at least nothing of the stature of
monuments in other parts of Greece. Some claim that the Spartans didnt consider that they
needed a monument of their strength, since the nearby mountain Taygetos was so impressive and
captivating. But one has to take into account that ancient Sparte really was a city unique in Greece
for its barbaric style, and perhaps its not that hard to explain therefore why it so frequently chose
to ally with foreign powers, against the rest of the greek Polis.

Thessalonike is a city with a 2300 year history. Founded by Kassandros, one of Alexander the
great's generals, it soon became the capital of his Macedonian kingdom. Later it became the
regional capital of the roman empire, that is capital of one of the four Tetrarchies, under Galerius,
whose palace still can be seen today in the center of the city. With the break up of the Roman
Empire into east and west Thessalonike became the "symvasileyousa" or co-reigning city of the
Empire, second only to Constantinople. This status continued in the Ottoman Empire. It was finally
liberated and became part of Greece again in the first balcan war (1912). Its then governor, while
signing the treaty of handing the city over, since he was outnumbered and faced certain defeat,
said that "we took the city from the Greeks (in 1430) and therefore its only fair that we are giving
it back to them". However historians note that it is very probable that the main reason he said that
was because he had heard of bulgarian attrocities against the turks in the cities taken in the first
balcan war, and so didnt want to risk the bulgarians taking over the city. The governon
of Thessalonike took residence in a wonderful building which today is the municipality building,
very near where i am living! :)I certainly urge anyone to visit my city, since it is very beautiful, filled
with wonderful monuments, and serene church yards (there must be more than thirty churches in
the center alone, one of which ,the Basilica of St. Demetrius, the patron saint of the city,is the
biggest in south/eastern Europe). Also notable are the 4rth century churces (Hagia Sophia, and
Acheropoietos- the name means "not built by human hands"- and the roman 3rd century
temple"Rotonda"which later became the church of st.George.

Souli is a town placed in the mountains, and was the scene of probably the most horrible action in
the Greek war of Independence. The women of Souli, when it had become obvious to them that
the turks would take the city back, and commit horrible acts to them and their children, climbed to
the edge of the hills, and with the children in their hands fell down on the rocks. This act ofcourse
isnt an act one should glorify, but sadly in this again we can note how barbarism from others can
lead to despair. And as psychology teaches us barbarism isnt something that just happens,
barbaric people are just people who have many traumas, and instead of figuring how to cure them
they resorted to becomming evil and nasty, so that the trauma wouldnt have the chance to hurt
them, since for example a person with a social phobia (fear of others) feels he is inferior to them,
but if he becomes evil and pressures himself to see everyone else as scum (whereas they arent)
this trauma continues in a state of hypnosis. This is why being evil always is a condition of
sickness, and never a decision, and it is quite impressive that this was also the claim of Plato,
thousants of years ago.

Historically Theodoros Kolokotronis, the "old man of Morea" and "archestrategos" (arch-general)
of the Greek war of Independence lived to see Greece become an itnernationally
recognised country. However he, like many other heroes of the Revolution, was later imprisoned
by the state, and died in jail. An interesting "anecdote" (since anecdote literraly means a story that
hasnt been printed, but this one has been printed) about Kolokotronis is that when the english
admiral Hamilton approached him in the Pelloponese and told him that he could arrange a deal
with the Ottomans, so that Greece can exist as a nation in the Pelloponese (considerably smaller
than the country that came into existence in 1832) Kolokotronis replied:"We do not understand
such talk about compromise, our emperor didnt compromise either, but died fighting the enemy"
He meant Konstantinos (Constantine) Palaiologos, the last emperor of the Byzantine empire, who
was killed fighting like an ordinary soldier, on his horse, next to the last of his defenders and
friends. Today in Greece talk of the Byzantine empire survives in both healthy (focusing on the
positive sides) and unhealthy (obsession with Constantinople) forms. It is usefull however to note
that no one has obsessions due to "stupidity", but due to some trauma that makes him feel the
need to filll a emptyness inside him/her (which is usually very big, since one seeks subconsiously
such a huge change as the re-taking of a city, but ofcourse that emptyness is felt for entirely
different reasons, and wouldnt be filled even if that happened).

Marcos Mpotsaris was one of the heroes of the Revolution.Today his exact nationality is
debated, and some claim that he was partly of albanian decent. I cannot say anything about this
since i am not familiar with the case, however i think that it is usefull to note taking this opportunity
that if he really was partly of albanian decent that only goes to show that people in the balcans can
very well fight for a common cause, and that ethnic purity isnt anything of importance, since
everyone who has lived a little knows perfectly well that there are horribly destroyed internally
people in every nationality. Moreover a little sociological knowledge tells us that one the main
reasons that modern day albanians are criminal elements in perhaps a larger proportion than other
people of the region is the pathetic state that Albania has been in, since it was shaped as an
independant country, less than a century ago. Misery always forms people, and it is a lot harder
for a person to understand what it is that shapes him/her when science, luxury and to an extent
even love and kindness (due to the bad conditions) is absent. That is so because even if a person
is lost deeply in psychological problems (as a result of repressed traumas) he/she will always have
a reason to "become better" even if the status of self-hatred has been reached, if there is someone
who loves this person. Because even if one doesnt love himself if he loves for example his mother
he will have the will to change, to get out of his psychological problems, the will to see them (as
they are, but sometimes that knowledge goes away) as problems, and not as "fate"or"individuality".

The city of Korinthos (Corinth) is one of the most important historically cities of Greece, and

only of the Pelloponese but also of the entire east of the Hellenic world, rivalled only by Athens as
a trading power, and later by Syrakousai (Syracuse) in Magna Grecia. In the time of the Apostles
the city still was a great center of wealth, and st. Paul went there and wrote two epistles to the
Corinthians, like he did to the Thessalonikeis (citizents of Thessalonike) and to the Phillipesians
(citizents of Phillipoi). In Byzantine times Corinth wasnt so prominent, giving way to Mistras, the
Byzantine Empire afterall was always centered in three parts: Macedonia (Thessalonike, Phillipoi),
Thrace (Constantinople and Adrianople) and coastal Asia minor (Philadelphia a bit in the inland,
and Smyrna)

horrible acts, but one has to see that it was a war fought for independence, and the failure of the
opressor, the ottoman empire, to change his ways was what forced in the end the Greeks of 1821
to seek the road of blood, as the last resort, to gain again Freedom. Freedom is one of the
fundamental values in life, and one has to remember that freedom isnt only something asked for in
cases of opression by another country, as in those times, but in our days and especially in our
western societies freedom is something many people are denied by other people, either
phychologically (which is the most common) or physically (as in the case of women, mostly from
eastern europe, being forced to work in bordellos in the west). My view is that if only we get rid
of our own traumas, and see clearly what is going on, we can prevent the spread of all this
polution (opression of people by people), which if not rooted will always multiply itself..

Arta was perhaps the military stronghold of the ottoman empire in Epiros. It also was the town
associated with one of the gloomiest greek folklore poems, about the building of a small bridge.
According to that traditional poem the people in those times were trying to build a bridge in Arta,
but whereas during they day the construction was going on, at night the bridge was destroying
itself. The solution to this was given violently, when the archbuilder was told that in order for the
bridge to be built he would have to build his wife inside it. That he did, and the bridge was
completed, but then his wife spoke to him from inside the bridge and said with anger that shw
vows to never let anyone cross the bridge in peace, that she would be moving it so that any
passenger would fall to the river and die. Then the builders told her that she shouldnt do that,
because perhaps her child would walk from that bridge, and so she decided not to. The meaning
of any myth is specific, and always psychological, but i wont venture to explain this one here- i
havent thought about its meaning anyway). Also it is a lot better ofcourse to end this anecdote in a
cheerful tone: even today in Greece when we want to speak of something that drugs on for years
and years without completion we call it "the bridge of Arta".
