SITE HELP

We hope to add to this list as often as possible! If you have a question that's not answered here, either regarding Apolyton CS, or the game CivII itself, post a message on our forums.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

QUESTIONANSWER
"Can you send me CivII and/or Conflicts in Civilization and/or Fantastic Worlds, or tell me where I can download it?" NO, WE WILL NOT DO THIS. We are dead serious on this one folks, no ifs, ands or buts. If you really want CivII and/or CiC and/or FW that much, you are willing to go out and buy it from your local software store, or directly from MicroPROSE yourself. Software piracy is around 25% in Canada, 26% in Canada, and much higher in other places in the world. We do not support software piracy, and we will not engage in it. Software developers lose billions of dollars in lost revenue a year due to software piracy, and one of the downfalls of the Web is that pirated software can be distributed more freely (there are over 30 million webpages) and to a much larger auidience than through any other medium before. In addition, this is against the law and can result in legal action punishable by law. It is your choice on whether or not your become a software pirate, how big of a pirate you become and what you pirate, but please do not get us involved in such activities. Any e-mails sent to us regarding this will be deleted and you will not recieve a reply, so please don't waste our time, or yours.
QUESTIONANSWER
"We don't have to pay for the files, on this Site, do we, or if we want to access a certain part of your Site?" The answer to that is a simple and resounding no! While there may be CivII files that will expire and you must than pay a small registration fee to the author, Apolyton CS itself does not require or request funds from our "everyday visitors" to get files, nor do you have to get a username/password whatever, all file downloads are freeware. Feel free to distribute them furtherly from here, but do not claim the files as your own and be sure to get the author's permission before posting it on another site and thus support our File Archival Policy. How are we able to keep this site free? Banner advertising, of course.
QUESTIONANSWER
"Ak! I found a broken link here! What gives!?" We've come a long way from the "Error 404" messages. Now, when you encounter a bad link, a message will be returned to you a) telling you how to get back on track, b) how to report the problem and, of course, our humblest apologies. Considering the sheer size of this site, you are bound to run into a broken link now and then. However, if you report it to us (nicely please) we will fix it. After all, this Site reflects us, GameStats and the whole gaming community so we want it to be as bug-free as possible. We're striving to be the best and it's going to stay that way.
QUESTIONANSWER
"Where are all the descriptions and author information? There's a lot missing you know!!" We know, we know, honest we do. We are working on this as a matter of fact. Thank you for your patience in this matter and we will get it completed a lot faster if you would please stop asking this.
QUESTIONANSWER
"I would like a CivII map/scenario/mod like...." Hold it, folks. Sorry, but we're not the ones to contact about that. We only store and link to CivII files by various authors (we are certain there are at least three dozen of them), we do not create them. If you would like a certain CivII file created, and you have a particular author in mind, contact them personally. If they have not given us permission to post their e-mail address, take your request to the Apolyton CS's Forums. Many CivII authors frequent the page at least once a week, so you are bound to get a reply from there -- it is a great way to speak your views on all different aspects of CivII . Good luck, and we will be happy to post the creation once it is completed (please ask the author to zip the file before sending it to us, if possible, thanks).
QUESTIONANSWER
"I have a CivII multiplayer question..." Everybody who is a real CivIIer asks a question or two about multiplayer capabilities everyday. Be this to themselves or outloud, we've been waiting a long time for true multiplayer capabilities and it will be here soon. If you have a question regarding Civilization II: Multiplayer Gold Edition, please email MicroProse. We post all the multiplayer information we get and as fast and comprehensive as possible.
QUESTIONANSWER
"I see all files available for download are stored on your HTTP server. Why is this? Can't we download them from an FTP server via our browser, or login as as a `guest' or `anonymus' to a FTP server?"The answer to this question is no, our apologies. We find that it is easier for people to download files off the World Wide Web -- we are doing this mostly for the newcomers to the Internet, who are probably not yet familiar with running an FTP program. Finally, we have no plans at this point in time at making them available via a FTP site either. If this situation were to change, we would make it a public announcement in the News section of our site.
QUESTIONANSWER
"All the files you have here are in this ".zip" format. Why is that? How do I open them?"Files are zipped to save on downloading time, transfer rates and server space combined. To open them (called unzipping), you need a compression/decompression utility to do this task. The two most popular ones are WinZip and PKUNZip. Apolyton CS recommends WinZip for it is much more powerful and stable than PKUNZip, and can be used indefinately (both of them). Towards the bottom of the page we have hyperlinks to local copies of WinZip, for both Windows 3.x and Windows95/NT, and Windows 3.x, Windows95 and DOS versions of PKUNzip, so you can be the judge of which you prefer. If you experience any further problems, send e-mail to the contact address(es) indicated on the page.
QUESTIONANSWER
"I've downloaded the file I want, I see all the files there, but how do I put them into my Civ2 directory so I can use them?"Simple. In fact, it's so simple that there are two different methods you can use -- either Extract the files into a temporary directory, and than Cut&Paste them into your local Civ2 directory, or just extract them directly into your Civ2 directory. It is easy to extract the files from its "compressed state" -- in WinZip, there is a big button that says Extract, and than you tell it where to go. If the file name that you are extracting will overwrite a file that already exists with that name in it's destination directory, you will get asked a question by your PC (or at least you should) about whether or not to you want to overwrite the file. You will say "Yes" if you want to use, for example, the new units.gif or rules.txt file that came with the creation. If you say "No", than it will not overwrite it .. clicking on "No to All" means that your Zip program will not extract any file to your destination directory that already has a file with the same name. Also, if you say "No", you won't be able to use the new goodies you spend downloading. You may now say what to do if you want to go back to your original files? Well, if you have yet to overwrite the originals, you can copy them to another directory elsewhere for safekeeping. If you've already overwritten but want to go back and don't want to have to search for the files on your CivII CD, than you can download "backup.zip", which includes all the original files known to be overwritten "all the time", from our MOD Pack page.
QUESTIONANSWER
"I see you have a few CivII chat rooms .. why so many and if/when do you have scheduled chats?" Ok, we'll answer this in several parts. First, with regards to the number of chat rooms that Apolyton CS has .. it is because in months gone past the sheer demand for these rooms have been overwhelming, and we know that some CivII players/authors prefer to talk about certain things, and thus they can choose whichever room they want to talk in. You can schedule your own private chat with friends at any time in any of our chat rooms, as long as their isn't an "offical" chat in progess. "Offical" chats mean those that are publically announced on Apolyton CS and in the Chat area. We will give 24 hours or more notice before an "official" chat begins, in which room it is, how long it is scheduled to last and who will be hosting it. Apolyton CS management would like to hold more chats than we do, but we try to schedule at least once a month, but that doesn't always happen. Once again, this is another free service from Apolyton CS, and because they are hosted by outside chatting sources, we do not offer tech. support for these pages, except if our version of the chat room has expired, in which case it is our job to update it and we will thus respond and act on that. If you send us a tech. question about these rooms, it might be forwarded onto the appropriate location, but the more likely event is that it will be replied to telling you that we are not the ones to contact on this, and we will than trash your mail. Finally, please recognize, as is with the Message Board, that there are CivII players of all ages in our chat rooms so please watch your language and conduct yourself in a appropriate, civilized manner.
QUESTIONANSWER
"I downloaded this file and it says "I need to have this as well" [and/or] "your copy has expired." What's going on?" Despite being a rare occurance, some CivII files do in fact, expire after a pre-set period of time (i.e. some of the creations at are executables) and some that require the Conflicts in Civilization CD or the Fantastic Worlds add-on from MicroProse. We, on Apolyton CS, cannot be held responsible if this happens. The documentation should tell you this information after downloading the file. However, we find that sometimes signals get crossed and you should try downloading the file again. If that still doesn't work, we recommend getting in touch with the author personally (after all, it's their creation!
QUESTIONANSWER
"Is there a CivII for the Mac?"Yes there is! In August, 1997 Macsoft released the Mac-flavoured version of CivII under the direction and co-operation with MicroProse. Numerous copies were pre-ordered and the product has been a huge success in the Mac gaming market. So, if you're a Mac user you no longer have to listen to your Windows-driven friends talk about CivII while you miss out on the action! We are working on a Civ2 Mac section on our site.
QUESTIONANSWER
"I didn't send you this file! Why have you posted it?" Apolyton CS has taken over the "File Archival Policy" created and originally administered by the now-deceased CivII Heaven. It states that we will not post a CivII creation without the author(s)' information, in which we can get this permission in a number of ways. Please check our full File Archival Policy for more details -- there is a link to it on our front door.
QUESTIONANSWER
"Do you post commercialized CivII creations?"No, we do not. These are copyrighted material and are not meant for distribution in any other median except from an authorized distributor or MicroProse directly. This would be a violation of copyright laws and is, technically, software piracy (so, please don't ask us where you can download Civilization II off of our Site or if we'd send it to you through e-mail). In addition, we wish to note that we now only accept files from "third-parties" until after we have contaced the actual author personally and have gotten their permission (A-OK) to go ahead and post their file -- after, it's their creation and their right to decide where and where it is not posted.
QUESTIONANSWER
"What's happened to the Tournamanet Games?" It certainly seems as though nothing is going on. While we are all anticipating the release of Civilization II: Multiplayer Gold Edition, these will have to do. To find out the latest, check out the Tournament Games page.
QUESTIONANSWER
"I e-mailed you guys months ago, and I still haven't recieved a reply! Have you even READ it yet!? I hope you have a good explanation!"Of course, not everyone, most in fact, do not talk this harshly when they e-mail us a letter that they sent before, or ask us why we haven't replied in so long. Tragically, due to our busy schedule (we have a life outside the Site, just to set the record straight), we do not have as good a response time as some other CivII sites do, but please trust that we will reply to you as soon as possible. Sometimes your letters may get "lost" in all our traffic, but that is a rare occurance. Please trust us that we do read your e-mails, and act on them as quickly as possible, even though we may not have replied as of yet. There was talk in the past of setting up an auto-responder of sorts, but that did not go over very well. In addition, we have three different people willing to answer your questions, depending apon what it is, and this has reduced the waiting time for replies. It is not that we don't want to reply, it's that time is tight! Thank you for your patience and we enjoying reading your messages of feedback!
