It's a really great game, combining the best of old ideas that were already best in "Civ2" with new ideas. I really like the advanced diplomatic system and the great "social engeneering" system.``To give each faction a different character that influences their policies and diplomatic behavior is also great.``There will be a lot of games I'll play it again ...

Meier and Reynolds(along with all the team)definitely know how to design games. SMAC shows it. Infinite options and possibilities, role-playing style rules(I'm a voracious role-player)and the best diplomatic system I have seen until now. The dark points: a few buggy(some erratic AIs.)and the lack of a custom faction option. I await the arrival of Alien Crossfire to here(Spain), for it will correct this "problems".``To all who have the chance - get into this games, they are the real strategy-simulation genre, instead of, in my opinion, the Warcraft series(where you pass all missions, and what then? All games become ultimately the same. Spectacular graphics and sound doesn´t matter to me if there is no real work behind)

It is a testament to the pure and unrivalled brilliance of this game that people are still giving it 9s and 10s two years after it first came out. Sure, it can get long-winded, but once you understand the ins and outs of this game, you very quickly become hooked. A new benchmark for strategy games which others can only hope to follow.

Excelent game. I love the factions, the social engineering and the unit design work shop, giving you access to literally thousands of different units.``Only reason not to give a clear ten is that there are a few uncorrected bugs.

PC strategy gaming at its absolute best hands down! This game has all you can ever want in running an Empire plus more. There are over 10,000 possible unit designs which can be any kind of land, air, or sea unit you can think of. It has random maps, scenario/map editor, terrain elevations and just a ton of options. Don't read any more of my review and just go buy this game now!!

This game is excellent for those who love role strategy, role playing, and science fiction, as it encompasses all of these and more! However, for the serious multiplayer, patience is a must.

This is absolutely the best turn-based strategy game out there. What keeps me hooked are the almost infinate different totally customized units that I can create, as well as the customizable gameplay and difficulty. This game is very deep and will challenge your mind more and more as you get better and move on to higher difficulty levels. The one thing that keeps it from a 10 is its graphics. While they are not the worst I have seen, with the technology available they could have been much much better.

Simply the best strategy game available today. An interesting plot, different leader personalities, a very deep gameplay, all of this combines to make SMAC the richest strategy game I have ever played. Truly a classic.

Almost the only PC game I play now - that and SMAX/ I occasionally go back to Civ II for nostalgia's sake, but the advances in game play, diplomacy and faction leader development make this truly a joy to play (bugs and all)````Endless permutations means that no two games are ever alike.````Definitely a ten!

A fine improvement on the genre of turn-based strategy, this little gem takes the Civilization series one step further. A fascinating science fiction theme with some ingenious new game concepts...an invigorating play even for the long-term civer, and in my opinion, the greatest game of all time. The eye-candy or the sound may not be the most beautiful ever made, but they nonetheless perform the function eloquantly. A truly legendary game.

Buggy it is, but it's also an extremely deep game, and a lot of fun to play. You will probably get more hours of enjoyment from this game and the series it is in than any other single-player game - and it has every possible multiplayer option as well. There's really nothing else to say.

Compared with Civilization, and Master of Orion II, Alpha Centauri is by far the best; combining the strategy of Civ, with the science fiction of MoOII, this is one game to satisfy any Sci-fi nerd.

This is the ultimate stratagy game. Graphics are little clumsy but the rest of the game makes up for that. If you have never played a Civ-Based game, try this one. You will be hooked for life.

Great Civ-based gameplay, excellently composed science fiction enhanced by great new features! Highly customizable automation, GREAT pathfinding, customizable units, an awesome ecology/terraforming engine, great interface, and for the most part highly intuitive graphics are just a few of the great features! Minor complaints such as the clumsy 3d graphics that tend to slow down lower end systems and customization that cant compete with Civ2 keep this game from being a 10. However, that doesnt keep me from recommending this infinitly replayable epic!

Of all the games I have, I keep going back to this one. This is simply one of the ten best games of all time. This is also the best of the Civ games and, until Civ III comes out, I think of this as the actual sequel to CivII.
