  1. ( quinns, 05-18-2001) Great game! In order to win you must have good building strategies combined with good military strategies.````Almost a perfect balance between playability and realism.
  2. ( Sebastian, 12-03-2000) My expectations weren't big when I bought the game, I knew that Civ2 had set a great standard that wouldn't be reached easily by another game. ``All I expected was a nice game that would fill my time for some weeks, until I would get back playing Civ2.``

``But even this low expectation wasn't fulfilled at all- the first thing I had to remark when playing the first time was, that it hasn't even been completely programmed, it was just a kind of beta version with so many bucks one can't count them. Every three turns, the system crashed, there were so ridiculous bugs like dropping atom bombs is not recognized as opening war.``

``The interface is almost unplayable and illogical concipated, the micromanagement totally impractical because it needs much more clicks than a single city menu.``This depends just on the way it was concipated, it's not the idea itself that stresses me.``

``There's not at all any concept in the game that deserves the name "diplomacy".``There are less options than in Civ2, maybe as much as in Civ.``Because I don't like too much war-orientated gaming at all, in my view the game's diplomatic system alone takes a lot of fun away, because war is inevitable after some turns.``

``This all is a pity, because i really like most of the ideas in the game: The lot of different governmental types is great - there are much I would have loved in Civ2. Also the water- and space-cities. And the idea to least the game until 3000 with all depending technologically advances until then ...``

``But the way it's done is just less than ridiculous; they just wanted a game on the market as fast as possible that has "Civilization" in it's name.``Now, "Call to Power II" comes on the market and it seems, it's exactly that game that one could have expected part 1 18 months before, to call it an acceptable game.

Greetings to everybody from Spain.``I own and have played all Civ games, along with various Sims and(of course)SMAC.``When I knew of the CTP release, unfortunately I bought it without pay attention to any review. ``The game as brought from the box simply doesn´t achieved any I expected. Even the new features were not enough to captivate me. Worse, when I played some games, the great unbalances were obvious. Add to this a not very attractive play interface(too much numbers, in my opinion).``To be brief: CTP takes the basic structure of Civs, changes some only for changing(there was no reason to do it), eliminates some of them(without reason!)and adds nothing new but some units(and the ideas behind them were not bad)and extended play to sea and space(good idea, too). The only thankful features: combine units in groups and the music(Celtic Winter specially).``CTP deserves this rating, and owes some of the points to the ideas copied from their predeccesors.``Better wait until Civ3.
  4. ( Solver, 10-07-2000) My favorite game. I just can't stop playing it, I really love it. I'm also an expert in Civ1. However, the bugs in this game are amazingly annoying.
  5. ( slamp, 10-03-2000) Sure I love it but I'm waiting for a 1.3 patch or ctp2
  6. ( Damien, 09-23-2000) i loveciv call to power.i had civ1,civ2``When you start playing you can't stop``What is bad is that in the first level, you can make 300 or 500 percent and in the second level this is really too hard.
  7. ( BigHead, 09-12-2000) easily more enjoyable than predecesors...more gizmos (like slaves and infectors) very slipshod out of the box, but then all the modders made up for that...the buffing made this game a great replay gem. Diplomacy is very good now in the latest mod as is trading and sea movement/combat. CTP also has a nice prolonged timeline though some eras and their science seem too compressed given the time to build and use some units or employ some wonder. C'est la monde till another modder ratchets on. Long live sim aggression.

I bought CTP months ago and just cannot get into it. I find it entirely cumbersome & slow compared to CivII on which I have spent hours & hours, I now have Civ II TofT, which is somewhat boring. I may have to revisit CTP after reading these reveiws as I seem to have missed something!!!

To me, the key to the Civ games is depth. Play for years and still find something new out, play 20 games in a row without using the same strategy. You are always discovering, always improving you're game.``CtP added compexity without adding depth, and actually removed some of the depth with poorly thought-out micromanagement options.``Every game I played with CtP - which was a fair few - was the same. There is an obvious, methodical and optimal pattern. The strategy forums were totally dead the last time I looked, occupied mainly by discussions as to which wonder was the most grossly overpowered. While the mods removed many of the horrible errors, they still left a game with a strategic element more at the level of noughts and crosses than of CivII.``If you only want to make mods, it's a great game. But although I love to tinker, that wasn't enough to keep me coming back.
  10. ( Troll, 08-17-2000) I love this game!!..I am kinda REAL new at Modding..but learning How,which opens up a new Envelope of FUN!..I like excluding units from time to time..to play with a set # Settlers..and its just awesome..yes a few Bugs but otherwise a SUPER GAME!!GREAT JOB ACTIVISION!! Keep up Great Work...!

Sucks badly. I'm sorry to say it but I bought the game a year ago and from the first time I played it's been in diguise.
  12. ( Steve, 08-14-2000) I've put more time into all the Civ versions than many high-school kids have put on this planet. They keep getting better. Its a daunting task to improve upon Call to Power, but I'm sure it will happen.

Having played all other Civ games, I think CTP has the advantage of being the last version, so including new options and features like the slavers, the undersea and galactic cities are not only interesting, but necessary. True, the trade system is better than Civ2's, thanks for the chance to build roads whithout having to support a settler or engineer, but CTP lacks some good things found in early Civs, that in my opinion deserved to exist in this last version. Why remove Wonders like the Great Library or the Hanging Gardens(my favourites)? So difficult is to maintain them and add new wonders? Where are the catapults or the cruise missiles? Why eliminate the city support of units? dust?) Well, I'm not going to list all the features that, in my opinion, are unbalanced or unnecessary...but I'm sure they CAN make an excellent game. Too bad they didn't want. Fortunately, there are mods that can, perhaps barely, fix that problems. Thanks and greetings from Wales.

Very good job over all. There are only a few small points that bring it down in score. The main thing I don't like is the way that your oponents magicaly pull advance out of nowhere when you get too far ahead. It makes the game more challenging however I think a better AI would be a lot less annoying, and make much more sense. This happens more often when you move on to more dificult settings. On one of the changes they made that I like the best is Public Works setting. I feel this is a much more realistic alternative to the od way of building settlers to make roads and farms. I liked this game quite a bit, a must buy for anybody who has plyed and like either of the previou games.
  15. ( ronin, 07-29-2000) Enjoy playing ctp for me a little challenging but not too bad. I have civ2 gold and sid meiers alpha centauri and ctp waiting on ctp 2
  16. ( 07-27-2000) Buzzard19 has written this review.
I really like the game. the trade is much simpler your settelers don't have to do irrigation all the time and i do find a challange in it. I have civ 1,2,colinization and now call to power, and this is the best by far. I can't wait for call to power two
  17. ( WhyMe, 07-25-2000) The best turn based strategy game ever. A giant step above civilizations 1 and 2. Wonderful new micromanagement and trade features. All in all a great game.
  18. ( WesW, 07-25-2000) Out of the box, CtP is not as well rounded and enjoyable as civ2 or SMAC. However, if you are reading this, then you have access to the mods at Apolyton which make this game better than those two aforementioned ones, imo. Combat is more realistic, trade is simpler and better, you don't spend half your time moving settlers around on mundane tasks. With the mods the AI is hands-down better and more enjoyable to play against.

I loved the variety of combat units and the Productions System. That is what i say. No more, No less.

Before, the greatest PC game was Civ2.``Now,it's it.And no others words.
  22. ( LittleTime, 07-01-2000) Didn't like the gameplay, and it doesn't have the heart of Civilization II. I recommend not purchasing it OR waiting until Civ3 comes along.
  24. ( naf4ever, 06-13-2000) graphics9 :music8 :strategy8 :Display9 :bugs unknowen? :crashes0 :speed10 ``:overall rating`` 9 3/4 otherwise, Great!````maybe maxis sould make a game like CtP

I love this game and hope to see more like it. I bought civ2, and didn't like it. The bugs are a bummer but time will heal, there are always going to be bugs in new software. The thoughts behind the game are incredable. So sorry critics I easily give this a 10. Sure would like to talk to the team of creaters or been one.

I like this version of Civil, but I have some bad observations about it. It MUST be a equivalent wonder of the Leonardo's Workshop, because is simply boring to collect ALL the obselete units in one big map and scrap them all for new ones. The interface of the game is very "economic", in the sense that some of the graphic-user-control found in the city's windows of Civilization II was lost, lacking the Sid Meier's original frontend. However, CTP is the game that completes the saga in my strategy-turn-based games.
  29. ( 03-30-2000) Great Leader Marianna has written this review.
Best game ever made!! The graphics could be more sophisticated, but this deficiency is more than made up by the complexity of the game. The units are superb, the diplomacy is very exciting, and the game is so realistic! The AI opponents have unique personalities. The best part is that you can rule your own way! Waging war is simply delighful. I consider it the perfect game, and I am enraptured by it!
  30. ( 02-28-2000) M. Caner Ozhan has written this review.
I really love playing this game. I don't agree that the game forces you to militarize, you can try various tactics.``It's one of the best strategy games I have tried.
  31. ( The True Demosthenes, 01-26-2000) Never played Civ I or II. Never played SMAC or SMACX. Never played Civ ToT.``I've got CTP, why would I want any others? It's the first game of it's type that I've bought, and I love it. The mods and patches have seriously improved it, although had I not been involved in PBEM games I probably wouldn't have bothered with them (keeping up with the Joneses and all that!).````Thoroughly enjoyed playing it, and hope to continue to do so.
  32. ( Mark H, 01-25-2000) Clearly I expect more from a game than others. Civ2 rated a 7 by me, CTP out of the box gets a generous 3. Luckily it's easy to modify to an 8 rating. Still problems remain, i.e. having to replace ANY original files for a mod or scenario, the hassles with loading pre-made maps both should be fixed. Still once you've spent hours modifying it, it can be fun to play.
  33. ( Emperor10, 01-23-2000) Call to Power is a good game, but it requires extensive patching before being so. Multiple balance problems takes away from the excellent graphics and layout of the game. For example, the "tanks losing to phalanxes" situation. Also, a lack of customizability in the original release and bugs galore. However, a little tweaking here and there to cater to your tastes and you'll find CTP to be a very engaging and addictive addition to your computer. The new trading and terrain improvement system is wonderfully easy to micro-manage and deserves a mention. A compromised rating of 7 because of the game's out-of-box problems seems to be fair.
  34. ( DiscoveryOne, 01-17-2000) Call To Power is an excellent successor to Civilization II, well deserving of a rating of 9 -- with one caveat. This is the rating that it deserves with the help of the many folks at the Apolyton site adding mods to the default game, as well as the Activision patch. Without these additions, the game receives only about a 7. ````Overall, my favorite computer game!
  35. ( 01-17-2000) The Rev. Brendan Powell Smith has written this review.
Improvements over Civ2: great graphics, path-based movement, trade system, future techs/units, nicer UI. Inexplicably dropped from Civ2: demographics screen, radar map that ceneters, ability to choose the color of your own civ, the use of your "leader's name" anywhere in a multiplayer game, end of game replay. Add to this: unstable and buggy multiplayer. In sum: CTP should have been a 10 but gets pulled back to being a 7. Won’t go back to playing Civ2, but CTPs flaws are annoying!
  36. ( Lucky, 01-17-2000) CTP's in-depth game play, and smooth graphics, have kept me busy for hours. Not only playing the game, but also customizing it to my own taste.`` Many improvments are needed to get the most enjoyment from CTP, but it's very easy to make those improvements with a site such as Apolyton.`` The CTP music will catch your ear, but the small selection of tracks often becomes annoying.``In conclusion, CTP is one of my all time favorite games.``I give it a 9.
