  1. ( RaceCivicR, 02-13-2001) I just went out and bought this game. I thought it was more like Age of Empires. The game looks nice but its real hard to play. I guess you needed to have played the earlier versions. Also the other thing was speed. Im on a 7500 upgraded with a 200mhz 604e and it just crawls along. I couldnt tell this was a processor intensive game though it runs like one. Maybe a G3 might be in order here!!! And i downloaded the patch and it runs a little better though i never had any problems described by others without the patch. Nice game but has its flaws though not that bad.

I have beat this game at the most difficult settings...Diety 8 civs etc. But it is hard to do!!! Great changes from civ 2. I couldn't play it satisfactorily until I got a 600mhz hp machine.
  4. ( Baston, 08-02-2000) As the forum moderator i'd be daft to give it anything less than a 10! But even if i wasn't i would still rate this as a 10. I am intensely interested in history and have also been a fanatical Civ player from the start. This game is simply phenominal, sure it has had it problems and can be slow but it is a truly great next step for the civilisation series... lets hope they port CTP2 over as well!
  5. ( Kris, 06-19-2000) i love this game
  6. ( Colin, 05-02-2000) Great game, great graphics, great everything. I'd give it a 10 if the memory requirements were more friendly.
  7. ( NATOMAN, 02-27-2000) Man, I wonder what this game is doing behind the scenes. Possibly, calculating the secret to the meaning of life or cracking some cold war russian encrypted documents. It must be doing something, because I have a 300Mhz G3 and this game is SLOW! It also takes a wopping 70someMB of RAM! That's as much as UNREAL, but without any 3D graphics! Civ II ran fine on a much slower machine that what I have... and besides some graphics and game play improvements, what's this game doing? Bad programming or what?

I've played Civ and Civ II and just purchased a copy of the Mac version of Civ:CTP and have noticed some problems: display not scrolling, inability to update "monuments" no matter what I click, etc. But overall I'm impressed with the improved graphics and animations. It seems that the AI still cheats but I do like the unconventional warfare options. Will have to see about the promised patch.
  9. ( David, 02-13-2000) I think this game is great. The new additions from civ2 are great. The graphics are very good as well. The only reason i didn't give it a 10 is because of the memory warning sign while saving (which more than a couple times made the game quit without finishing saving), and the multiplayer problems. But if both of those problems are fixed once the patch comes out i would give it a 10

I have to give it a seven due to the problems that were known about the game, but it was released anyway with the promise of a patch (or two or three...) in the future for the problems and any others that pop up. I've played several games and while I agree the graphics and some of the new forms of warfare and unit support are nice changes from Civ II, the memory and processor requirements seem a bit too steep for just those items. If Civ II ran ok on a 040 Mac, then these 'upgrades' should not stress a 603/604 chip - and a G3 should make it fly!

I don't know what all these people that say they hated this game are thinking... I thought most of the changes were a VAST improvement over Civ II. You can actually survive fairly well without going into full out war. The unconventional warfare is great. Trade is much better (no more driving them freight trucks around manually). The Public Works I love (I hated supporting settlers and engineers far into the game). I liked supporting the military through the government (it takes enough production just to build the damn things!). I give it an 8 for two reasons. ``
``(1) The hardware requirements are a vast understatement, my 7600/120 with 80mb RAM took a beating.``
``(2) when was the last time a group of people with sharp sticks took down machine gunners???

Well I've just finished my first games and hmmm. Some of my first thoughts were whats that memory this all about? I would say if you don't have a G4 stacked with ram you should turn some of the graphics off like the battle screen and animated unit movements etc and watch out if you're adding undersea inprovements, the game crashed twice and I lost everything, that doesn't make you happy. That brings me to another point save, save, save. Appart from all of these things it looks a lot nicer than CivII and some features like trade were easier. However the battles seemed unveven. In several cases pikemen were beating my storm marines - what's that all about!!!!!! If you enjoyed Civ II becaused of the ideas behind the game then you love CTP but if you just interested in the game itself might be better to hold onto your $50. SO why the 8? well, I loved Civ, I adored Civ II and I'm warming fast to CTP.````Where's that patch...
  13. ( Finrod, 02-01-2000) I agree that the game is ridiculously slow, but other than that, it's great! I love most of the changes and am getting used to the others. :)
  14. ( Carch, 02-01-2000) I've heard sex is better...````But seriously, folks, think Civ II with sweet graphics and alternative (economic, religous and technological) warfare, and stir in some nice features like build queues and multi-turn moves, and you have this fine game. The mac port does still have a problem or two, especially in multiplayer, but a patch is forthcoming. I've had no problems at all playing in single player mode, but I've read that others have seen out of memory and other errors.````A released patch would make this game a 9 or a 10, but for now, I'm from Missouri ;) I give it a seven because I was hoping to do a lot of multiplay, and the multiplay bugs make it difficult (even impossible in the case of mac-to-mac multiplay).
  15. ( Baston, 01-30-2000) I disagree entirely with the other review here. It's a truly amazing game with amazing graphics, an intuitive (once you learn it) control mechanism, and some truly excellent wonders and advances. I just won my first game in one of the many ways you can and it was far more thrilling than anything civ2 could ever throw at you. Now i would have given it a ten, but when the patch comes out... i surely will.

I have only played this game on the Mac so far, but if the PC version is this bad, I have no idea how it got so popular. It is glacially slow (even on a G3 233), the interface is definitely not intuitive, and the screen does not scroll to follow moving pieces. In fact, I have had pieces on the other side of the planet move without me telling them to, and I had no idea where they had moved to. Hopefully, there will be a patch or upgrade available, otherwise, all mac gamers out there are SOL.
