CivConverter
Review it ____ Rate it ____
Description:
CivConverter is a program capable to transform Civ2 Scenarios into a Civ2 TOT compatible version. CivConverter is also capable to convert graphic files only, if you just want to convert some wonderful Civ2 icons into your TOT Scenario. Some simple error checking has been added, eliminated virtually all differences between Civ2 classic scenarios and TOT converted versions. A lot of problems of version 1.2 are fixed with this version and this version seems to be a stable one.

  1. ( Leon Marrick, 05-21-2001) Every user of TOT needs to have this program to hand.````The documentation claims that this program will convert just about any civ2 scenario, and just about any civ2 graphic file, into TOT format. I have tested this program with a number of scenarios, and it has worked in all cases except one, and that one may possibly be a bug in TOT itself.````For being such a mission-critical app, and for making wondrous claims and proving them truth, CivConverter gets the highest possible rating I can give. It has made converting files into TOT format so easy as to not require any GUI. Angelo Scotto should have been well-rewarded by the makers of TOT for doing what they unaccountably didn't.````---------````Be certain you read the help files very carefully. The author's first language is not English, but he makes himself tolerably clear. Here is a synopsis:````- put the civconverter folder into your root directory.``- put your scenario folder into your root directory.``- using microsoft paint (called either "paint" or "mspaint"), convert all .gif files into 24-bit format.``- use a DOS prompt to enter the civconverter directory, and issue a command similar to the following:``"civconverter c:\myscen\myscen.scn````If you have your DOS prompt where it should be, and know where the scenario file is, and if all associated files are in the same folder as the scenario file, and if you have properly converted all graphics files, you will most probably get a working TOT scenario in the folder called "converted".````double-check the converted files, transfer any extra files that civconverter didn't, and have fun!

This is a work in progress and the programmer deserves thanks and encouragement.``One of the complaints people have made is about the lack of a GUI. He states in his readme that he is indeed working on it. When he completes that phase, the program will be much easier for non-technically oriented users (or as someone said, "an average person who simply wants to play some ToT scenarios``because I like strategy-games."````The utility does a good job of converting the scenario, but it seems to have problems with the graphics. The converted files I got had problems with the transparent areas, and with a few odd distortions. Again, this is due to a problem which he is aware of (basing his program on 24-bit graphics rather than 16-bit), and is fixing.````Overall he has given us a significantly useful tool which allows us to use the thousands of available Civ2 scenarios in TOT. Thanks, and keep up the good work, Mr. Scotto

The function of the program is excellent. However, it lacks a GUI and a simple help file. Basically good but definitely could be improved.

I respect the hard work that went into this program, but the amount of time that I had to putn into this program and not have it work was disappointing.

The read-me file is excellent for those who are really in the computer world and fluently in it's terminology..````But I,as an average person who simply wants to play some ToT scenarios because I like strategy-games,can't make something out of the explanations.````It's very tiring, and I get bored...I tried to convert for almost 2 and a half hours, and I only get it half-done.Don't even ask me about the colour files.(GIF/BAT)````If just the maker of this converter could translate his explanations in a understandable language for everyone, also to people who are new to this world of files, and downloading. He could do this by using a lot of literally examples,in which he gives step by step explanations what to do.````I have no doubt the converter is excellent, but something which isn't usable for me,how ever good it may be,is like it doesn't work...````So I rate it low,for all the headaches and boring minutes which passed by when I tried to work it out.
  6. ( Mark, 09-07-2000) The CivConverter is obviously a result of a lot of hard work and effort by its designer. This utility is outstanding!
  7. ( Joe, 08-30-2000) This utility is realy cool in its ability to enable thousands of scenarios run with the new game and graphics!!!
