I also agree with the people who say the LOTR movies are better than the books.
(and, for the record, I have read the books, I read them before I saw the movie and I generally like the fantasy genre. Tolkien had an awesome imagination, but couldn't write good prose)

And, on a related note ..... how likely am I to find screenings of movies in english in Daegu? I don't mind them having korean subtitles or something, but I'd hate to miss watching the 3rd LOTR movie in a proper cinema.

I don't understand how people can criticise the lotr so strongly - they are fantastic books! Maybe the problem is that they have been so copied over the years that some people don't realise how original they are. Tolkein created an entire mythology - an entire culture if you like - to set the books in. To my mind that is quite an accomplishment which I have not seen done as well anywhere else. I notice that most of these critics are quite young - maybe they don't realise what Tolkein gave the world.

I loved the movies too (and I am looking forward to The Return of the King) but I am not stupid enough to compare them directly to the books. The books set out to do one thing and the movies set out to do something completely different - and they both acheive their goals masterfully.

As for the original poster's objections, do you really think that people are saying that they liked the book better in order to show off? You must have some very sad friends. Reading a book is no great accomplishment.

i dunno where there's a theatre in daegu. all the ones i know are in seoul or ch'ongju... but i'm sure there's one there. from what i remember, movies are rarely dubbed, so chances are good you'll just see subtitles.
these theatres are usually near the city center/downtown areas.

Well if he did create an entire world then you'd be surprised at how influenced it is by a world more close to home. If you're going to give credit for creation of such worlds then how naturalistic is Dante's Inferno (and the other sections of the Divine Comedy)? Is LotR popular in the orient? The whole of Middle Earth is absolutely smothered in Christianity of the most puritanical, fusty kind.

Considering my work schedule if I manage to read 1 book a week it's a minor accomplishment.
I read plenty of other crap, tho'. Most of it 1 page long, from wanna-be writers or self-aggrandizing bastards.

I do the exact opposite. Seems to be better that way. If I like the movie than I can still enjoy the book, since it is soooo much better. This way I can enjoy the book AND the movie, instead of enjoying the book and being let down by the movie.

Sphere sucked I read the book and watched the movie, the both DID suck. Haven't read a Creighton since.

LotR: I read the first two books, and got bored. Thus, I am really excited for the third one... I think the long fantasy series bore me... I only got through 2 Wheel of Time books, and I couldn't get pass 150 pages of the Goodkind book I was reading.

Harry Potter: Both movie and books are fun. Even after reading the book I still enjoy the movies.

Really, I read books that no one will turn into movies: personal finance and other self help books...

While I love to read and do so at a similar speed, I have a busy job, a wife and an infant child. Try finding 8 hours a week in those circumstances when ANY free hour could be used to catch a nap and put a dent in my sleep deficet.

I get to read about 2.5 hours a week, usually while standing on the bus to and from work. The only other reading I manage is some poly or news sites but thats a few moments snatched here and there at work-- I can hardly pull out a novel at my desk

Well, I haven't read the book. Actually, I almost never read books for leisure. But I can believe than the impressive, thousands pages-long, very detailed epic in which the author has put all his guts, is better than a two-hours movie that has no time to display fremen slang, history, etc.

The movie is of honest quality (star-warish, but..), but it seems obvious to me the book is infinitely more rich, and is infinitely a more breathtaking voyage in such a different universe.

Movies often require either to squeeze any of the "fluff" that makes a book polished, or it requires only to adress one event in the book, thus not reflecting the entire work.

People can be smug when they say "I've read the book and it's better". But people can also do so to indicate there is more to see than a too short and shallow movie.

I take it your problem is with people that brag that they read a book. If that is the case I agree, I dont like any kind of braging.

I dont see the problem if someone wants to talk about a book and even compare it to the movie that was made about the book.

It takes me about 2 days of reading to finish a 400 page book, not sure on the time I spend on the book. The only time I usually have to read is on the weekends, so I end up just reading a book in 2 weeks that way when I find something I like.
