"The Ages of Man": A.C.S. Delivers Online Distribution Exclusively Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

From the official announcement:

quote:

An extensive, unofficial expansion pack for Activision's Call to Power II, The Ages of Man (AoM) was developed by a team of CtPII fans headed by Stan Karpinski over a period of more than two years. For the past month, copies of AoM has been shipping on CD to those who have purchased and continue to purchase it from its official website. No profit has been or is being made from these sales -- the cost of each purchase covers the expense of the CD, protective case, printing, burning, postal charges and shipping box. As of today, those looking to acquire AoM have an alternative delivery option. As part of a multi-tiered agreement between Karpinski and reknowned Civilization series and related titles fan-site Apolyton Civilization Site (ACS), ACS has become the first and exclusive online delivery portal for The Ages of Man.

If you are looking for more information AoM, we recommend visiting both the official website of the game and the related forum thread here at ACS. The download link is directly below -- please consult the related information ("NOTES") prior to commencing transfer.

- Download The Ages of Man v1.1 (546MB) -

~ Diplomacy Update ~

Do not link to this file directly. Link to this forum thread instead.

Direct linking is a violation of the agreement between ACS and the AoM team.

NOTES

- To download AoM, you will need WinZip (http://www.winzip.com) or a similar compression utility in order to access the files contained within the single ZIP.
- At 546MB in size for the first file available for download above, the ACS administration recommends users connect to the Internet with high-speed (ISDN or greater) access to download.
- In addition or in lieu of high-speed Internet access, ACS also recommendeds that users use a World Wide Web browser or separate program that supports download resume in case the transfer is interrupted for one reason or another.
- ACS recommends GetRight (http://www.getright.com) as a download resuming program.
- ACS' server supports download resuming.

I'm looking at the purchasing screen right now and I'm confused. I never got CTP2 so I'd have to buy that as well as AoM, but I'm seeing three seperate "Add to basket" options. The wording is strange for the two CTP2 options, hence my confusion. Please help.

Edit: Erm, I just noticed the link to the AoM .zip file in the OP. Does that mean it's being offered as a free donwload, that you pay only if you're getting it on a physical CD? Obviously, one still needs to pay for CTP2.

Can someone test it and confirm whether an acquired copy of CTP2 works with AOM?

Thanks Markos. Payday is today at one job and Monday at the other so I'll probably order CTP2 sometime next week and download AoM while I'm waiting.

You will most likely get it working. However, the best way to run CtP2 is to run the Source Code patch (which doesn't currently work with AOM, but hopefully will soon), and you'll never get an acquired copy to work with the Source Code patch.

Do you need the source code patch if you are running the AOM mod though?

No you don't. As said, AOM won't even run on the source patch now due to a problem with arrays in the patch. However, the code patch already has superior AI decisionmaking (which will only help the AoM's improved AI), plus the source patch crashes a lot less and has a ton of bugs fixed - otherwise, CtP2 is very buggy.

Doesn't fully answer my question: are there bugs/poor AI problems that (a) the source code patch addresses and (b) are both still relevant with the AOM mod and not addressed in AOM.

I would think that the mod would change stuff that was crap in the original CTP2 anyway, so that the source code patch would no longer be necessary.

Of course there are problems that aren't addressed in AOM and are in the source code patch. Otherwise we wouldn't need the source code. There are things fixed not only related to the AI.

Of course it changes stuff that was crap in the original version, but first there is more that can only be fixed with the source code and second you shouldn't reduce a mod to a patch. Primarily a mod should add elements to the game that aren't in the original game. And indeed AOM does it intensively and addresses along the way issures that it can address.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Martin is right. AoM fixes, for instance, the AI, which is quite capable in AoM - although the source enhcancements would help it even further. But, there's a number of problems with CtP2 that AoM can't fix, but the source patch does. For instance, quite a few crashes, bug where your tech progress isn't saved if you save the game after discovering a new tech, bug where you can see if enemy cities are defended or not, several not-working buildings, and so on.

Thanks Martin.

Though I am still puzzled as to why, if the source code patch is necessary for an optimal AOM game, the two are not compatible at present.

Just a comment.

I play AOM happily without crash problems most of the time. Occassionally there is one related to the chariot archer unit being clicked an dragged. So I use the "m" hot key for movement as much as possible. Saves time as well.

Otherwise in 19 out of 20 games I have no more problems than with MS Word or PSP7 which freeze or crash every now and then.

Those people who have got the AOM CD and ARE playing it, (unlike most modders it seems), have universally (almost) complained the ai is too aggressive and the game is too hard. I settled on the ai improvements as, in my opinion, the ai acts like a human player in on line play, can never be trusted until it fears you, and then only slightly. The other comment is that geography and resources are now CRITICAL, which is what I wanted.

I still have 7 legit copies of CTP2 to on sell, can be ordered from the AOM website:

http://www.theagesofman.net/Buy%20AOM.htm

$13.00 Australian shipped anywhere in the world.

Yes, it is a little bit difficuilt to understand. We fixed and improved a lot of stuff. So in theory the source code edition should be suppirior. But unfortunatly we discovered a problem recently, that prevents certain kind of slic code to execute properly. In fact that holds for the original game as well. But there it might work sometimes, sometimes not and sometimes it makes the game crash. And that is something we don't want to see and therefore it doesn't make sense to restore the orignal state regarding this issure.

No, that's 'only' 1.6 GB -- but that's only for the first half hour or so ('Poly is on EST right? and Dan posted this thread at 23:30 EST if I calculated it right)

The first full 24 hours it produced 56 GB

Actually there were 196 hits in total, that's only 300 MB/hit. Some people on slow connections probably download the thing in several sessions spread over several days, and some use accelleration software which gives multiple hits per download. And of course downloads that are started before 0:00 but end after it, get spread out over 2 days in the stats (or at least I think so). The strangest thing is that there are quite a few people that appear to have downloaded it twice, a couple even more often. I can only speculate that that's overenthousiastic accelleration software or something like that

If I'm reading the stats right (but I'm not sure I am) there are (at least?) 82 unique downloads.

it's probably cause by downloaders which split the file in parts and do multiple requests to the server. this probably messes apache's reporting somehow....

For the time being, questions about AOM itself, bugs, strategies, will be answered at the AOM forum:

It makes sense to have it all in one place.

Later AOM will transfer to Apolyton.

Suffering from ads?

Just a quick note to help people get going with AOM.

The main changes between AOM and CTP2 and other mods would be.
1) The new outpost tile improvement. This allows you to use a good anywhere on the map (as long as it is in owned territory) to gather golde and/or pw. In addition certain outposts on goods add happiness, fight disasters or promote bonus events. This leads to a player being able to claim and use tracts of territory which otherwise, tended to be ignored and left empty.
2) Supply for military units, changes how you conduct war. Along with this comes sieges and supply trains.
3) A complete range of military units for each period including flanking infantry for use in mountains.
4) AI has been beefed up, passive personalities removed, attack beefed up in strategies.txt and a spearate code that makes it more likely ai armies(size 10+) at war with you are more likely to attack if they start next too you.
5) New scoring system which gives points for cities, wonders, territory and triumphs but deducts your aggression level.
6) Special historical events, the Dark Ages, Huns, Mongols and Black Death.
7) Elite units, generals and heroes as well as more wonder units.

Outposts are the biggest single change, changes the way you play, geography and location of resources is now critical.
