The townspeople are just a bunch of bloodthirsty, trigger happy, know nothing peasants consumed with their petty quarrels. They are only interested in a witch hunt and a mock trial followed by a lynch mob style execution. They don't care about finding the real culprit.

That's why all of them are going to suffer terrible deaths and Mafia will emerge victorious once again.
