Tired of ads?

Hmm... Can I write the Official Strategy Guide?

I just got Siege Towers.... and I'm beating the AI senseless. I finally captured to cities of Massila and Syracuse (after 200+ year sieges!) In Iberia, Gades is about to fall, and I am also plotting an invasion of Greece....

BTW, I just did the second events change. I didn't get much time to playtest during the weekdays with schoolwork et al, so now, I think I'm going to try to finish this scenario....

More to come later.

Prometeus, you can send the map to me, I´d like to help you, the only thing I have to say is that I´m not sure that I can open your map, because I´ve only FW, not MGE like you (or?). But perhaps the mapeditor is exactly the same for both versions, so we should simply try it out...

Ok, I finished the events for the Phoenicians today, the events for the Macedonians still need some work...

Both civs have three events files, not four, as the Romans. The reason for this is simple: because of the destruction of Carthage and the Roman conquest of the Hellas there are no special historic events for both civs after 146BC, so after that time a game as Macedonians/Phoenicians will be very unhistoric, but still a lot of fun, I think...

So, Macedonia and Carthage will face heavy Roman attacks during the period of the second events file.

Ok, who´s interested to play the Phonicians or will someone again test the improved Roman version?
I ask this to make sure that not every tester plays the same civ, so please post your opinion or drop me a mail ). Thanks

Hendrik, the Phoenicians are now only playable in the English version, but I´ll retranslate their events into German over the week, so that both versions are on the same level...

OK, I've played the new version as the Romans to 349 BC, and I've benn very lucky. I managed to get Capua without losing a single unit out of my 7 vet basic legions. The Pheonecians no longer dash themselves against the walls of Rome. I control everything from Kroton to Ravenna, with the exception of Tarent.

Minor nitpicking: I think you should capitalze "Army reform of Marius" and write it as "Army Reform of Marius". IMHO, it makes it look more professional. On its Civilopedia entry, I believe that your refering to "Marius' mules" a nickname for the legionaaires due to ther heavy sacks.

For some wierd reason, I was able to talk to the Greeks. You might want to check this out.

Suffering from ads?

I enabled contacs between the civs because some testers want to check the enemies advances via the Intelligence reports. As Phoenician the Egypts talked to me to demand the withdrawal of my troops.

But diplomacy is still forbidden via events. Were you able to start real negotiations with the Greeks, Shadowstrike? In this case I have to change this back...

No, they just demanded that I withdraw my troops from Kroton, which I promptly sacked....

For some wierd reason, the Independants are always building their capital in the city I am about to conquer, first at Paestum, then Tarent, then Apollonia (sp?)

I'm not sure if anything can be done about this though.

Their capital is no big problem, the Independants are only included as "victims".
They are the biggest civ in the beginning but would be conquered sooner or later, even with another location of their capital, that´s ok, because I want to avoid that they become more powerful as the real ancient powers.

One question: what do the Macedonians? I have strenghten them, so they should be more successful against Persia.

Apollonia seems spelled right to me

Ok, i've played the new version of the scenario at least partially (flu is killing me ).

A couple minor notes:

Syracuse is spelled Syracuse not Syracusae.

Amphitheatres(Coliseum) needs to come sooner than with Acting. I experienced some major problems with the Phoenicians and civil unrest because I wasn't able to get the improvements fast enough. And that was late in the game (like 280 BC) and I controlled most of Europe at that time.

Add another land square to the south of Rhodes to allow normal landings. Trying to take her with ships and amphibous landings is an major drawback. Doing this will alos allow it to be more historicall accurate. (IIRC, the Romans landed a team of Legions in the south to conquer Rhodes IRL)

That's about it for now.

Thanks for the feedback, WarVoid.

I think, Syracusae is the Latin spelling Thanks also for the Rhodos hint, that should be changed.

For the amphitheatres, I think it is more challenging when they are not available too early?

You control much of Europe around 280BC, very impressive! But the Punic Wars should make some things harder for you...

Not trying to stay in the past but, I just read in a book written by a Friulano himself, called "La Nostra Storia". It says that around 500 BC, the Carnics migrated to Friuli and built the city Achileia, which later grew up to be a trading center, on the Achilis River . In 181 BC the Romans defeated the Carnics and renamed Achileia to Aquiliea which sounds like the Latin word for 'eagle', Aquila. So the Romans did not found Aquileia, but merely fortified it to protect the frontier and their trading interests in the area.

Livius wrote this passage, referring to Aquileia's occupation by Gauls ( "... in gallica terra..."). Even if this passage is unsure, it could mean only two things:

1) this land was occupied by Carnics Gauls in 181 BC ( so when Aquileia was founded ), or
2) this land was occupied by Carnics Gauls in 65 BC ( when Livius wrote his History ).

There are several other points:

a) in 500 BC late Halstatt culture in Friuli is identified only by proto-venetic and istrian/illirian features ( and not celtic ones ),

b) there is no evidence of a Danubian Valley occupation by ancient Celts before early IV century ( and historical sources mentioned Illirian Autarites' defeat in 310 BC )

c) Halstatt culture gave birth to Celts, Illirians and proto-Venetic cultures; and these three culture typologies are well identified from VII century BC

d) in ancient greek sources ( and i mean the "Skylakes Peryplus", composed around in the IV century midst years ) there's no mention of celtic cities in this area;

e) first celtic cities are mentioned in that area only after Boian tribe's destruction by Romans in 190; only form this time Carnics are mentioned as celtic tribe, a tribe that moved to Italy shortly before this timedate - they were forced to move to Italy from Boemia ( Boiohemium = homeland of the Boian people ) by Germanic tribes' raids

Don't worry, BeBro, you did the right thing.
Anzac, be careful... sometimes friulans are darn campanilistic... Can you send me more accurate infos from this book bibliography ?

Hey Bernd, your scenario is driving me mad :

After a terrible struggle I finally managed to take all of Italy. Then Pyrrhos came, took Tarent and Kroton (I managed to get Kroton back, but Tarent is still in Greek hand), then the Independents took Ravenna. Grrr... I was so close in taking back all of the Independent posessions-then they simply conquered Rome!
Could you send me the latest version too? I'll send you some detailed reports then. It is such a wonderful scenario.

My book "La Nostra Storis" was written by Pre Checo Placereani, a priest and Friulano and he made the mistake of omitting a bibliography. So in light of me having barely any proof and you quoting historical sources...I guess you're right!!

But I'm still going to check in other places so I can prove you wrong!!! Mwahahahaha!!!! Seriously, I'll check in other places just to be certain.

Stefan: You must destroy Phyrus ASAP when he arrives. Destory the siege towers when they are outside of cities, and acculmate 10 - 12 legions inside of Tarent, Kroton and Paestum shortly before he arrives. he shouldn't make a dent in the Roman conquests.
