panag, I agree that the cause of the attack has a lot to do with the negative image of Israel protrayed not only in Europe but throughout the Arab world. The people who do that are fanning the flames of anti-Semitism just as much as Hitler once did.

So in analogy we shouldn't criticise the regime in, say, Saudi Arabia 'cause it'll mean people will be less friendly towards arabs? Most people on this side of the atlantic can tell the difference between the imperialist Israeli state killing machine and jews in general, you know.

Yeah, but Buck, there does seem to be a drumbeat of negative spin against Israel. You even seem to admit it. What you do not seem to admit is that affects many, particularly Muslims, to hate Jews in general and to attack them.

It affects the feeble-minded and the insane. Taxi Driver made John Hinkley try to asassinate Ronald Reagan, doesn't affect the justification of that movie at all.

How about applying some of your vaunted libertarian-american principles and stop blaming the actions of individuals on an intellectual climate? Anti-semites are entirely and fully personally responsible for their views, surely?

In other, almost certainly under-reported news, the German MP that was recently accused of making an anti-semitic speech has been expelled from the parliamentary party of the CDU.

And Britain could have a Jewish prime minister in two years time.

Actually I think the problem is not that some people hate to hate, but rather that they love to hate. We are all powerless at times to prevent events in our lives that give us pain, yet being who we are we feel at some level that we should be responsible. For some people having a group of people to invest with blame gives a fair amount of relief.

Britain has already had a Jewish prime minister. His name was Benjamin Disraeli.

Yes, but he was ethnically Jewish at a time when an awful lot of people wouldn't have bothered to make the distinction. Did you know that the Christian Identity movement originated in England?

According to the news al-Quida just claimed responsibility for the bombings of the synagogues in Istanbul. No details as to how this fit into their goals were given.

Suffering from ads?

Dr. Strangelove, given the recent statements from Mahathir about Jewish domination of the world, it seems clear how radical? Islamics think.

What may have begun as anti-Israeli sentiment clearly is now outright anti-Semitism in most of the Muslim world. It is hard to imagine how anyone could have expected something different after decades of anti-Israel spin and outright propaganda.

Ok, if Michael Howard wins the general election, he'll be Britain's first practising Jewish Prime Minister. Too bad he hasn't got anything else going for him.

I presume that if Britain elects a Jewish PM al-Quida may initiate attacks against great Britain. One wonders what stance the other EU nations will take on such an occasion.

What's the Christian Identity movement?

Christian Identity is a bizarre church that believe that English speaking christains are the true Jewish race and all Jews are imposters planted by satan. The movement in the US is quite vocal about its hatred for minorities and ZOG. The Oklahoma bomber, Timothy McVeigh, apparently had had some contact with them in the year before he staged his attack. I would imagine that they would have thought that since Disraeli had been born a Jew then he must have been some sort of satanic infiltrator. I don't know what the leaders of the movement in 19th century England actually thought about Disraeli though.

ISTANBUL, Turkey (CNN) -- Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is holding talks with his senior ministers in the wake of the Istanbul synagogue bombings in which at least 23 people died.

Monday morning's Cabinet meeting comes hours after two claims by groups linked to the al Qaeda terrorist network for Saturday's bombings, as well as an attack on Italian peacekeepers in southern Iraq last week.

Erdogan said authorities were investigating the claims, made Sunday in the London-based Arabic newspaper al Quds al Arabiya and the Saudi-owned magazine Al Majalah.

But intelligence analysts have discounted the claims, pointing to a history of similar dubious ones in the past.

Turkish authorities have speculated that the attacks at Neve Shalom, Istanbul's largest synagogue, and another two minutes later at the Beth Israel synagogue five kilometers (three miles) away were possibly carried out by terrorists from outside the country.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul described the blasts as "a terror attack which has international links."

But the country's Interior Minister Abdulkadir Aksu said it was too soon to tell. Investigators are "considering every possibility," he said. "Any organization could be behind this."

Members of the Turkish news media had earlier reported a claim of responsibility from a radical Turkish Islamist group, the Islamic Great Eastern Raiders Front.

Four men detained and questioned by Turkish authorities were released, a senior security officer said, although officials had called them suspects.

Officials investigating the blasts say security tapes from cameras mounted outside the synagogues showed men driving slowly past the synagogues shortly before their vehicles exploded.

The bombers were among the dead. More than 300 were also wounded in Saturday's attacks.

Officials credited tight security around the buildings for keeping the bombers from inflicting more damage inside the synagogues. Many of the casualties were Muslim passers-by.

Turkey's Jewish community numbers about 25,000, in the predominantly Muslim country of 68 million. Avi Alkas, Istanbul's Jewish community leader, called the blasts "a severe blow to our community".

There is no tradition of anti-Semitism in Turkey, which has long been home to a vibrant Jewish community.

Journalist Andrew Finkel said the Jewish population was "feeling vulnerable," but the blast was also an attempt to shake Turkish confidence.

Turkish authorities viewed the blast not so much as an attack on the Jewish community as one on Muslims and the many other people who were killed in the attacks, he added..

"They're treating it as an attack on Turkey ... an attempt to destabilize Turkey ... an attempt to bring terror to the country," he told CNN.

Investors also said the blast could harm Turkey's tentative economic recovery. As a major tourist destination, the country is sensitive to incidents that damage its image -- especially as it awaits progress on a $16 billion deal with the IMF to restore its economy.

European markets were down Monday, partly as a result of the bombings. (Full Story)

"With New Year coming we were expecting so many customers. Yesterday with the bombs I'm afraid they'll all cancel," Ahmet Haksoyleyen, a carpet seller, told Reuters.

ISTANBUL, Turkey -- At least 20 people were killed and 257 injured when two cars laden with explosives simultaneously detonated near two synagogues in Istanbul early Saturday, according to the Turkish Interior Minister Abdulkadir Aksu.

AKSU: As you can see our colleagues are continuing the investigation. The scene is being investigated by our teams -- the explosives specialist team and fire brigades are still investigating.

A police officer died and a security officer died and another police officer is seriously injured. I am going to go to the scene to investigate there. Following that I will assess the situation with my colleagues.

Are there signs of this incident being an international terrorist act? Obviously an act on this scale was probably not done by one organization in Turkey. We are considering every organization, internal or international. It is possible but we cannot be sure whether they parked the car here and it exploded later or they parked and arranged a time bomb, or there was someone in the vehicle when it exploded.

It is very important that we must make proper investigations before making statements or accusations. When I was asked at the airport, I said possibly the vehicle was parked and then exploded. But I came here, examined the site, and understand that no car was allowed to approach the site, so we are going to investigate further.
