So why did they land 1000's of infantry soldiers before they bombed or nuked the ugly bugs to ashes?

It's still a crappy movie, and it's not on the list, because it's not a modern war movie, it's a FUTURE war movie...

Much better than I expected, but I guess my expectations were mis-placed, I should have known Mel Gibson wouldn't let his homage to Vietnam be lacking.

I still have to go with Patton, GC Scott was great. Unfortunately the large scale of the movie wouldn't allow the use of somewhat genuine equipment. Sorry, but seeing Patton tanks with German emblems was a let down. That's why I like Kelly's Heroes and Saving Private Ryan, the use of German equipment was cool. Another war movie I liked was Sink the Bismarck, good naval action...

And what do you mean too old? It came out in the 70s. All Quiet on the Western Front is from the 30s, at least the first film version is. The newer one is from 1971. Just admit it. You hate America. I knew it.

I'm going with Band of Brothers. The effects are excellent, and the story, in my view, is much more compelling than that of Saving Private Ryan (probably because it's true). It was also very well cast.

I love Saving Private Ryan as well. The realism of it is absolutely stunning. I also like FMJ. It's absolutely surreal, and it gives me the creeps. And who could forget R. Lee Ermey as SDI Hartman?

I haven't seen all those films, generally war movies bore me I even saw Navarone's cannons only once and other moveis you don't know only once and if, but from a *technical* viewpoint the most alithophanes - reality approaching, war movei is Black Hawk Down I think.

One ironic scene in Starship Troopers I liked was when the one recruiter said "Join the marines! It made me the man I am!" as one of the actors was noting that most of his limbs were missing. That was a very real world moment to me.

We Were Soldiers gets my vote for capturing all sides of the war well.

I also like Full Metal Jacket, as my second nomination.

5. The Wall (not the pink floyd movie, it's newer, and is a very good movie about vietnam that pick 3 names off the Vietnam memorial and shows the events leading up to the deaths of those soldiers)

Yeah, but the movie was just a bit much because it had a contrived Hollywood ending. In the real battle as decribed in the book, it ended in a communist victory with the 2nd Battalion all but wiped out. (The movie centered on the activities of the 1st Battalion.)

I know a lot of people don't consider this a war movie but I think it fits the criteria. IMHO no other film has done as good a job in savaging the stupidity of war... or done it so hilariously.

"Grave of the Fireflies" for seriously examining war from the civilian/children's side. NOT for repeated watching, much too sad.

I really liked that one too. Jack Nicholson at the top of his natural talent. But it isn't really a war movie, as there is no battle photography. Didn't it become a TV series that is still on, starring that hispanic babe as a marine prosecutor (or lawyer or whatever)? Can't remember the English title though.
