Unfortunately there are many in Beijing who cannot pass up an opportunity to score nationalistic points with the general public. And anything that presses the Japanese button is guaranteed to work.

Prostitution is so common here (at least in Chinese cities) that that can hardly be the motivating concern. It was the irresistable combination of Japanese businessmen and the unfortunate date they chose for their ill-fated shindig that made this affair such an opportune target for the propogandists.
