In our neighborhood games (mid-70s, SW Michigan), we used to call them "status symbols" (I know, dumb name - but so is "boat"). I had one friend who had the wooden blocks for armies; everyone else had the plastic pieces.

Played almost everyday when I was home. Great fun.

However, there is a much more fun version of Monopoly designed by a Canadian, Pierre Berton.

It's called Klondike.

Hm... We played it a lot as kids... We didn't have problems finishing Monopoly games...

RISK could take some time, however... But then they came up with mission cards... Even if you only have one territory left... You can still win....

If played right, no one ever gets to draw their 5 card (except maybe the first person to get 5). It should be over by then. Or in the last round.

I've played (and finished) lots of monopoly games... we only cancelled the game a few times... If a game drags out, we just take a break, and finish it the next day...

Exactly...

I used to love this game, almost begging for others to play against me... but about a year ago I finally could get my familiy (Don't know any friends who even just remotely 'likes' board games) to play a game... though we could only get my brother to play the game if we played with his rules: Cheat whenever possible
That was the most boring game I've ever played... I haven't played monopoly ever since, and doubt I'll play it within the next 5 years, because I only know 3 other people who likes this game... and two of them only wants to play it if they can cheat...

I just don't see why anyone would cheat in a game like this... I understand why people wants to cheat in SP games... but MP???
It's kinda the same as if someone doesn't want to play Civ3 because there's no feature in the game to cheat in MP games

I usually play with this rule in another board game (One I play seldom... don't like it that much)... though only with 3 dices... I don't know what this game is called in english, but the danish name is Ludo...

A mission/objective card was something they introduced in newer versions of RISK. Each such card states a mission, each player has one and the first player to complete his mission is the winner (world conquest isn't the only way to victory). The cards are not shown to others, only you know your mission.

Examples of missions include: "Take Africa, Australia and one continent of your choice", "Take North America and Europe", "Conquer 24 territories of your choice" (you don't need to have a single entire continent here), or "Eliminate the red player" etc...

It adds some tactical/strategical new elements... And the fun when you seem to be completely out of the race, not even having a continent of your own, then exchanging a nice combo of cards for armies and wipe out the red player (which you have carefully closed up on), showing your mission card with a big smile on your face... Read it and weep!

How can people cheat in Monopoly? If it's the board game we're talking about, then you're observed by others when playing aren't you? You mean they load the dice?

A friend of mine nearly lost his girlfriend over a Monopoly game (they're married now). He was the bank and made up his own rules. He'd lend money to everyone, but her... He claimed there was nothing in the rules preventing the bank from deciding whom to take on as a customer... They didn't talk for a couple of days...

The flip army sees and knows all.
It is always good to see more flip lovers, even if they prefer the antipodean flavour.
I hope that *Flip McWho* made good on his debt.
