Dear Mom & Dad
During my travels you have been in my thoughts all the time. Sadly, I have not been able to contact you until now. Thanks to good fortune we have finally reached civilized land, where we can send forth news to you at home.
When we left our home port of Theveste, none of us could even imagine what lay ahead of us.
We have chartered vast areas of wilderness and finally come to foreign lands where we have been given a warm welcome.
When we started our journey over 3 years ago, we started by sailing along the coast of our own glorious empire. Even though I have been told of the empires greatness it was bigger than I ever dreamt of. The Pyramids of St.Owen By the River is something that will impress even the gods. All the stories you have been told are true. But seeing them was not the purpose of our trip. After passing the Ivory colonies in the south we head straight out in the ocean. That scared many of my mates but not me. As I am one of the few onboard that knows the secret of writing I have become friends with the ships officers and navigator, despite being only a lance-corporal. They told that local fishermen believed that unknown land lay ahead, under the horizon. The trip over were shorter and less dangerous than we thought, and we did indeed find new land. We landed on two small islands. They were not inhabited. It struck us with awe that we were probably the first men to set foot on those island. Only Gods and animals have been there before us. On the smallest island we even found gold. Not much of it vere visible but one of the Master miners that followed us on the voyage assured that there much to be found below the ground for those who were willing to work. We took with us what was easily available though. The biggest share went to the Emperor, Captian Ahaiab and my good Commander Bero. Those of us who were there that day were also given our share. I got a pebble so large I could just about hide it in my fist.
After leaving the island, we really hoped we were heading home but our Captain had other plans. After crossing another ocean we arrived of the coast of a vast jungle. After some time it became clear that is was the same jungle that seperates our empire from that of the Mysterious Celts. We knew nothing of them except rumours so it troubled us when we found out that the captain was steering towards their territory instead of away from it. Those who have to cross the jungle by foot no doubt hope to get through as soon as possible. We had a pleseant voyage, watching the jungle from a distance, but we wished the jungle would never end. Of course it did. One day, mountains and hills rose from the jungle and soon there were no more jungle left. At the foot of a mountain we saw a settlement. No more than a small town but nonetheless it brought us both fear and joy. Joy because we it was the first sign of humans we had seen in years. Fear because it was inhabited by a people of which we have only heard rumours. Not all of them were good.
If there ever was a change of mutiny on our ship it must have been that day. But our good Commander told each end every one of us to gather his weapon and stand by. It turned out to be completely unneccesary cause we were never shown any hostility. For one thing the foreigners didn't have ships. It was still wise because it helped our men to keep their courage and not panic. That night we anchored within sight of the town but too far out for anyone to swin. The morning after we sent a small detachement on shore to meet the strangers. They met us with a similar group, and after some were unnerving hours they returned to the ship to tell us that we all were welcome on their shores but weren't allowed to enter the settlement. We spent a lazy day at the beach, walking slowly round and watching the strangers with astonishement. And they studied us. That they wore different clothing were only to be expected, what really amazed us were the difference in appearance. Their skin were different for one thing, not brown like ours, it was bright, almost pink, like the skin under a newborn babys feet. Their hair was different too, some had black like us, but many had brown, or straw-colored, some almost white, and some had hair like copper. When we dared go closer we saw that even their eyes were unlike ours. Where our eyes are yellow, theirs were white like we never seen before, and blue where we are brown.
The next day they held a party to our honour. After all that time at sea it was a blessing to taste the food of civilized men again, even if it was food we weren't accustomed too. Some of us picked up a few words so we could communicate with them. They turned out to be both friendly and curios. Their commanders and chiefs seemed a bit wary of our presence though so we will leave tomorrow. My mates hope we will head home but I know better. We will head even further away from home. That's why I am allowed to write this letter. Our Captain has aranged for this letter(and others) to be carried by foot through the jungle to our closest outpost, and then hopefully to my home in the north. By good fortune, I will return to my beloved family once again.
