You really are homophobic, aren't you?

Reasonable gay activists demand nothing more than being allowed to behave the same way that heterosexuals behave in public, that is considered to be appropriate behavior for public places.

And thumbs up for this police initative.

I think it might be to give recruits an idea of how pervasive and open hostility to gays can be / is. That might have an impact on how seriously they treat people who are having problems.

Police departments in many places underwent other excercises and training not so long ago so that officers would take domestic violence seriously. I don't think that was assinine, nor is this.

If anything, I'm a little disappointed that it would be that easy to arouse open hostility, especially in that area of the city. If anything, that validates the excercise. [Edit]Rereading, it wasn't clear that they did this on Whyte Avenue, but still.[/Edit]

DinoDoc: It's not a matter of the police not understanding that homosexuals don't want to be harassed. It's a method of showing them first-hand how such harassment might be carried out.

There are, they're just closeted because the police force tends to be extremely macho.

Get a bigger avatar today!

This from racist, homophopic, right wing Alberta. Hopefully the East wakes the **** up to realise we're one of the more progressive & tolerant areas of the nation.

Not kidding. There's plenty of spin available to argue against it (oh no, gay marriages - how important!) - but deep down, Alberta has a lot more to offer than the rest of the nation, considering.

Well, I guess since cops are supposed to protect and serve, it's a good exercise.. do little experimenting and have first hand information about the situation.

I mean, they do put women cops to play as prossies in the streets and then catch the guys willing to pay.... so, why not put few guys to be as gay and then catch the ones that tries to attack them, if there is higher hate crime rate in some places, it could be tried out.

Well, IMO it shouldn't be the goal of police to help instigate crimes or misbehavior for the purpose of catching and punishing the subject. But there's a key difference between prostitution and harassment of non-heteros: homophobes don't tend to seek out homosexuals for the purpose of harassing them, whereas those soliciting prostitution are looking for prostitutes.

It isn't illegal in Canada. Communicating in a public place for the purpose of buying or selling is. Many cities now license escort services, and some of them encourage 'owner operated' to cut down on exploitation. The object is to get it off the streets and out of the hands of pimps.

I concur with this. You would think that Whyte Av. would be one of the more gay-friendly areas of the city, what with the whole cosmopolitan thing they have going on down there.

I'd hate to see what would happen if they did this exercise in... um... I just realised that I don't really know what area of my own city is regarded as "most conservative"...

Uh... I wouldn't reccommend that men walk hand in hand down by the Greyhound Station and the Edmonton Centre parkade, but then again, I wouldn't reccommend that anyone walk down there, if they can avoid it.
