How does the IRS know you are cheating them on taxes when you apply for welfare driving an Escalde? They just look at the facts. And if you did deposit it into an account but still paid for college out of the common pool then you are not in violation, they don't care which dollars you use. However, you do have to be enrolled in the college you told them (and they WILL know this), and have to pay back the money. So using it for anything besides college is just screwing yourself since you still have to cover that bill, and federal aid never covers all of it.

Room and board, not rent, is a legitimage college expense.

HOWEVER... those convicted for selling drugs should be given free college educations as the dealers are universally intellectually superior to the addicts.

I have financial need, it's just with my scholarship and job in addition to my financial aid, I have more than enough to cover tuition, rent, and food.

Because the loans have no interest while I'm in school (including grad school), it makes perfect sense for me to help cover my mom's high interest loans.

I was going to make this point myself. Fewer people should go to four year universities right after high school. It's a big waste of money for many of them. A university education shouldn't be an entitlement for mediocre middle class kids. Clear away some of the dead wood and spend the money on giving everyone a decent education K-12.

On topic this is one of very many crap educational policies in the U.S.

You could not give them full paid education, but certainly make it part of a rehabilitation program. It would have to be loans.

If the kid who happened to do drugs still has a better resume than you in terms of getting into college and being elligible for aid, I have no sympathy for the others.

On the actual thing- if you increase the number of legitimate applicants, you lower the chances everyone has equally. This is not "rewarding kids who did drugs", this is making thier application equal in standing, given they already paid for their acts as society saw fit.
