I continue to think these big cubes were just ugly. I generally dislike skyscrapers, but all those featured in this thread are more interesting than the lame WTC.

One of them, alone would be ugly. But two of them both calms the tone and emphasizes their size at the same time. They made a great recognizing feature or center to pictures of the skyline, they were loud and distinctive (and who gives a **** if it's a cube? I'll take one over whatever else there is, a spherical building or whatever, any day.)

It could have been at least a little imaginative like Bank of China's, or even a little ornated like Chrysler's... But these things were just utterly lame.

What are you talking about? There's beauty alone in size, and it looks twice as good when it has a twin.

A building holds things, it's not something to be framed in a museum (even if it is by coincidence as is the WTC, good-looking.)

Maybe I'm dumb, but I think a monumental building, that will be seen everyday by tens of millions of people, should be more than spaceholders.

Singapore has a really wierd building, it has two sections which extend out the sides of it, then they go upwards again. I'd really like to see a photo of that one. I think it was a communications building.

Another one in Singapore I liked was an extremely gothic one, it sat alone in a large open grass field, I think the whole building was made of marble, it was very impressive, but also something a vampire would build if he took control of the world

That's Shanghai's "Tomorrow Square". A Marriott hotel occupies the upper stories. The building itself is odd-looking from some angles, but rather cool from others. Looks better at night when the "pearl" inside the "claw" is illuminated.

For skyscrapers, Shanghai has it all. From grand to horrific, retro to Jetsonian, interesting to just plain weird. Lots of weird. I bet Shanghai is the world leader in UFO-topped skyscrapers.

That's it! 934 feet tall with 55 stories. 3rd tallest in Shanghai.

Completed in 1931. For 41 years she held the title of world's tallest building until eclipsed by WTC.

Since 9/11 she once again stands supreme over the New York Cityscape.

In Portland Maine, where i was born and also the home of Longfellow's Statue, we had a building very similiar, in the bottom IIRC, was State Drug Store, complete with Soda Fountain.

I allways thought this was a nice lloking building, no not a "benchmark" for building just easy on the eyes!

Thanks for the memories.

Next to the WTC, I never really thought about it, but the Flat iron has more appeal than things like empire state or chrysler.

Thanks to GePap, his photo of the Flat Iron in NYC, I went to the website www.greatbuildings.com

This is a pretty interesting website

I took a few moments to view and for real, many interesting and educational tidbits on the why's and when's.. of how great buildings came to be
That is for those of us whom dont know anything or have limited educational backgrounds..well darn I am pretty much the only moron here, because most people whom post here, from what I have read KNOW EVERYTHING..but on the chance that maybe someone may visit whom doesnt know everything please enjoy....

Peace
