ZOCs, Sciences it's not as important as random reduction. Too much depends on random in civ3. Leaders appear by random, but sometimes it means victory, but it's random. Starting near resource may mean victory, but it's random. And so on...

ZOC was removed to make AI pathfinding easier, and almost everything that was done in Civ III was done to make life easier for AI, which in some ways did make the game simpler and more repetitive. This was because Civ III was designed for 7 civs singleplayer while I think multiplayer at the core would have helped to put some features in the right perspective. The only undisputedly great feature of Civ III is the resource system. I like culture, but as a previous poster said, it introduced even more randomness into the game. And there is a school of thought that says randomness has no place in true strategy games, of which Civ franchise is the apogee (see Civ Evo for example).

Anyway, here is the game that started this whole mess, and gave rise to internet sites with tens of thousands of members ready to flame folks that dispute their favorite Civ title... ladies and gentlemen... the one, the only............. CIVILIZATION!

I loved CivII. I never got into SMAC. I love CivIII.

To each their own.

When CivIV shows up, I will pony up the $50-60 it will likely cost. I've DEFINITELY gotten my money's worth out of CivIII/PTW. Conquests is still a work in progress.

I loved Civ, liked Civ II, Loved SMAC and SMACX, loathed Civ 3, liked PTW, and am thoroughly addicted to C3C. I've been playing it since it arrived mid-Nov, and I'm not sick of it yet.

Put an end to popups!

Che - have you been patching or are you using the original release?

Firaxis is still working on patching it, and when it's done the gameplay will definitely be different than the original release.

I have to admit, I was surprised to read this: "loathed Civ 3, liked PTW, and am thoroughly addicted to C3C" since, to me, it's all basically the same game, and it seems the features/lack thereof in CivIII that pissed off most people remain present in PTW and Conquests.

My usual comment to people who pop up and say "I hate CivIII, should I buy Conquests?" is "No, it's essentially the same game you hate."

Depends on what you hated. I don't know when the ability to turn off culture flipping showed up, but I like that. I like the new traits, it really increased the variety available. Plus quite a number of minor improvements which really fleshed out the game.

But then I just now have become bored with C3C, I wouldn't say I loved it, but I feel like I got my moneys worth. Plus I didn't hate Civ3, I just felt disappointed and like I didn't quite get my moneys worth.
