ZOC was removed to make AI pathfinding easier, and almost everything that was done in Civ III was done to make life easier for AI, which in some ways did make the game simpler and more repetitive. This was because Civ III was designed for 7 civs singleplayer while I think multiplayer at the core would have helped to put some features in the right perspective. The only undisputedly great feature of Civ III is the resource system. I like culture, but as a previous poster said, it introduced even more randomness into the game. And there is a school of thought that says randomness has no place in true strategy games, of which Civ franchise is the apogee (see Civ Evo for example).
Anyway, here is the game that started this whole mess, and gave rise to internet sites with tens of thousands of members ready to flame folks that dispute their favorite Civ title... ladies and gentlemen... the one, the only............. CIVILIZATION!
