Instead, all marriages (for the purpose of gov't) should be civil unions... licensed to any two individuals of age. The actual institution of marriage is a matter for the churches, temples, synagogues, and mosques.

I think this is a reasonable compromise solution.

I also had a few observations. I am trying to point out the problems gay marriages would cause in order to see if there are any solutions. My initial conclusions are that gay marriage is will not fit within our legal framework because it causes other strange issues to arise. This suggests that define civil unions in such a way as two promote equal rights where equal rights make sense without impacting traditional marriages in other ways.

Sava also has a solution which on the surface make sense in that the government get out of the marriage business entirely and only deal with civil unions. But on second thought, I again must agree with the Supreme Court of Massachusetts that this is impossible from the equal protection point of view. So civil unions must be called marriagesand should presumptively have all the same rights as traditional marriages.

My good-looking first cousins are 14 or younger. They aren't even on my radar. The good looking cousins my age are all distant enough to be acceptable incest. But we're all married (c'ept Theben).
