If you could access that HD at all then parts of it might be write protected some how. Don't know for sure but that is the only thing I know of that will not allow a re-format attempt after the couple of embedded warnings asking if you are sure you want to do so.

If the drive responded to being written to and read from as a slave in your machine if it did contain a virus then its highly likely that your PC also got infected. Did you hear a series of short beeps before posting or boot-up after or during the installation. If so those are present to warn or rather inform the diagnostician of what is occuring. Different Mother Boards have slightly different codes for what the beeps mean. If it sounded different or was making those beeps after installing the new slave drive then something might very well be amiss.

If in a pinch newegg.com and zipzoomfly.com can ship FEDEX 2-day most times for free and for $50 to $75 you can have a top of the line newer model HD pretty quick.

Now that you mention it, I think there was an innoccuous little beep yesterday at powerup. No need for fedex, I'll just drop the drive in to a shop on the way to work, and if they can't do anything with it, then it's time to buy... from the same shop.
