About 40% for std or small. I would not have guessed that. Some very determined players out there it seems.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

I play Large generally although the current game is Huge.

I find the results of the poll surprising as most strategy discussions on these boards are geared toward the standard map.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Huge seems to be represented very well. So is standard, standard isn't surprising considering as TheArsenal said most of the discussion here is geared towards the standard map.

By the way your CFan (civ fanatics I presume) graph is missing 0.1%

You would not want data to the 10 significant figures, here is the actual table to 1 decimal. It's harder to read thus I used pies. And yes,
"poly" is apolyton and "cfan" is civfanatics.

Poly % Cfan % Both %
tiny 0 0.0% 2 2.4% 2 1.6%
small 7 15.2% 4 4.8% 11 8.5%
standard 13 28.3% 27 32.5% 40 31.0%
large 10 21.7% 17 20.5% 27 20.9%
huge 13 28.3% 31 37.3% 44 34.1%
random 3 6.5% 2 2.4% 5 3.9%

Totals 46 100.00% 83 100.00% 129 100.00%

While we're on this topic I have a couple of quick questions for anyone that can answer.
1. How do I add all 31 civs to a game? I want to have a game on a huge map with 31 (or whatever the top number of civs is) civs on it.
2. Does the size of the map have anything to do with the ability of the AI? Does a huge map make the AI 'smarter' or is the AI better with a small map?

Did anyone reply to this question already? If not...

1. Load up scenario editor
2. Check "custom player data" in the scenario menu
3. Select "Scenario Properties" increase the number of players to 31
4. Save the game as 31 civs or something

Then you just click on the civ-content or whatever it is and load the scenario and you can add all 31 civs, you still get to chose the random map properties like normal.

The only problem is it's gonna take ages for the computer to move later on unless you have a real powerful PC.

Full PM-box? Change here!

I prefer the gameplay of a large or huge map, but the AI really is crippled by the industrial ages. It's just not smart enough to carry out a massive attack on a sprawling opponent, or to defend itself from one. With standard or smaller maps, the AI is better able to sort of brute force itself along. This doesn't really mean larger maps are easier, though. I think the early game is a bit harder, because so much is luck at that point, and with more opponents you're less likely to be a lucky one.

So, my experience is that the beginning game of a large or huge map is fun and challenging, but once you get past it and establish yourself, the AI is a pushover, and the larger map just makes conquering them more tedious. This is of course true with any map size, but is increased by larger maps. I still voted for large, though, because that's what I played my most enjoyable games on, before I had learned to exploit the AI.

I believe that bigger = better, so I sacrificed the "tiny" world size and replaced it with "Monstrous": 352x352, 31 flavors, no waiting.

...actually, lot of waiting, but at least I get some housework and exercise done on the weekends.

Tired of ads?

As huge as possible! I also like recreating history or at least historical rivalries between civilizations with epic conflicts and realistic parameters.

I also tried different modifications, where deserts, mountains, jungles and tundras are more or less no-man's land, as you can't build cities there nor can get enough food. In this way game speed is acceptable on huge maps and CIV has a different flavor. At least you don't have to conquer all those tiny cities at the end of the world.

Got spare money?

I like huge, with few other civs and pangea. I like to build and develop my cities before I roll my Panzers for my Blitzkrieg.

So long....
