We had that thread before, and the last I remember our resident legal experts decided he couldn't be the one with the hold because he wasn't on any related committee (or something like that).

quote: Running For Senate In 1984, Kerry Called For Cancellation Of At Least 27 Weapons Systems And Reductions In 18 Other Systems. “[Kerry] recommended cancellation of 27 weapons systems including the B1 bomber, the cruise missile, MX missile, Trident submarine, Patriot air defense missile, F15 fighter plane, Sparrow missile, stealth bomber and Pershing II missile. He recommended reductions in 18 other systems including the joint tactical air system, the Bradley fighting vehicle, the M1 Abrams tank and the F16 fighter plane.” |
This is 'almost every significant weapons system' in the last 30 years? 27 systems? That's it? Obviously not because 18 others he's called for reductions in (ie, I don't think that's voting against the program, just voting against the current funding of the program).
Hell, some way or another we have to reduce the defense budget. We have to balance the budget and military will not be spared.

Here are a couple cited quotes by Kerry:
John Kerry: “When I vote to give the president of the United States the authority to use force, if necessary, to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security….” (Sen. John Kerry, Congressional Record, 10/9/02, p. S10174)
John Kerry: “[W]ithout question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction. So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real.” (Sen. John Kerry, Remarks At Georgetown University, Washington, DC, 1/23/03)

It is true that Kerry opposed the financing of a couple of very versatile weapons systems, a good majority of them were outmoded at the time of development, or designed for a role that no longer exists.
Let's face it, the cold war is over. No matter how much certain people would like to see a threat in China, China has become economically dependent upon us, and would not risk open war. The only real combat situations the military will face are Iraq-y situations, situations where advanced air-defense avoidance systems are irrelevent, and the ability of our next-generation fighters to match the theoretical capability of the russian fighters is irrelevent, as their fighters will never be able to be built. In Iraq, the problem is not the equipment, the problem is the deployment and protocol. Given this, Kerry's anti-weapons-funding record should not be significant, and could even be a plus for him.

Indeed.
The cold war is over. The military-industrial complex has no more use in its current form. Making machines that will defeat the Soviets does not matter any more. Making strategies that will bust up the terrorists, now that matters.

His record of standing up for America and for Americans actually engaged in combat is 100% -- lacking.

And the B-1 bomber was a white elephant.
The Patriot missile defence had a low success rate.
The F-16 was pointless duplication.
The MX missile system (put nukes on railroads and play hide the pea game) was incredibly stupid and in the end rejected by Republicans and Democrats.
The Pershing II was an unnecessary replacement for the Pershing I.

1. Right now, in the U.S. press there is article after article pointing to the facts that Saudi Arabia is not much of an ally. Not a democracy. The 9/11 bombers were mainly Saudi Arabian. It makes more since to sponsor a regime change to the Arabic country with ties to 9/11. Yet we did not. |
Pax, so long as the Saudi's are an ally, we have influence. We use that influence rather than attack them.
quote: 2. What should it matter to the average U.S. citizen if Kerry is pro or anti israel. I don't see any benefits from being pro israel although there is a benefit to being fair to both parties which we don't seem to be. When you are fair to both parties then you have credibility we don't have it. The question should be can Kerry get us some credibility as being a fair arbitrator between both parties or can he at least do a better job than President Bush. I find it troubling when the rhetoric from washington comes back everytime a Israel conducts an attack, builds a wall, and etc, the administration says "we are troubled" or "deeply concerned" by the recent events on the other side. The Palestinians are condemned for every suicide bomber, for every act berated and punished. It makes me wonder who's the hypocrite. |
Israel is an ally and a friend. The Palestinians are part of a larger Arab nation that has relentlessly made war on Isreal. Our friendship with the Arabs is contingent, and should be contingent, on their constructive attitude towards making peace with Israel.
quote: 3. I doubt Kerry is pro communist. His wife is a big time capitalist. Just because he does not see communism as inherently evil does not make him pro communist. |
All you have to imagine is Kerry standing amid hundreds of North Vietnamese and Vietcong flags, accusing American soldiers in Vietnam of being war criminals, denouncing the government of South Vietnam, and praising the North Vietnamese to draw your own conclusions on that issue.
quote: 4. As of today, there are no weapons of mass destruction the american people were promised. That leads me to believe that as of today, Kerry would have been right not to go to war with Iraq. |
Kerry said that had he been president, he NEVER would have gone to war with Iraq. Without having gone to war, how would we have known that ther were no WMD?
quote: 5. The U.S. has a technological advantage that is years ahead of the Iraqi's. At a certain point the effectiveness per dollar goes down. Why would you need the most expensive stealth aircraft to do X amount damage when a cheaper aircraft could get the same results and still come home safe. |
Kerry voted against every advanced system the US now has that allows us to win wars without the loss of men. Had Kerry been successful in defanging our military, we would be fighting wars in Iraq with machine guns like we did in Vietnam.

1. We have allies other than Israel that are not pro israel. In that case we should be fair with our friends. Israel has fired on an american vessel. Israel is the kind of friend that you gets you into fights with others. Why don't we use some of our influence on israel. If we were fair we would have a better chance of getting peace in that area of the world. One of the main factors that caused WW2 was the treaty of Versailles after WW1. Why don't we learn from our mistakes and start treating these countries fair.
2. Why do you make communism seem like it's a bad word like rapist or child molester. It's not. It's just a person with a different political view. We should not hate those that disagree with us but look for common ground. If you take that one word that you despise out of the equation, you might question our involvement in vietnam.
In addition, Ned if you are such a strong supporter of democracy, how can you justify the U.S. involvement in Vietnam. We were instrumental in opposing the geneva accords that called for elections in 1956. We basically denied the people of vietnam self determination and then sent american soldiers off to make sure that our will was done. Not the people of vietnams will. How exactly can you support that?
3. On Iraq. So the only way to find out what's in Iraq is to open a can of worms. Look at the news that's just what Iraq is.
4. I question the need for high tech weapons in Iraq. You can send stealth bombers and tomahawk missiles to patrol the streets. So I don't see the value of using a 100 million dollar missile to take out a building when a 100 thousand dollar missile can do the trick just as well. Our high tech weapons do not protect us from low level weapons. The USS Cole has one of the most advance weapons and detection suites in the world. A small boat loaded with explosives was able to do what an excocet could not.
