When I woke up I was in darkness. Whoever had knocked me out previously had also tied me firmly to a chair and set me in what I judged, by the dank smell and moist air, to be the lower levels of the castle's labyrinthine dungeons. At the time I had no idea who my captor could be, or what he wanted from me, but still I shivered both from cold and from fear.

After an unknown length of time, I saw a light coming towards me, a lantern. I squinted my eyes against the light and shouted for help.

An answer came back "Is that you sir?" It was Major Alva's voice. "Have you found van Helsing yet, sir?"

I shouted that I was Dr van Helsing and to be very careful, as I had no idea where my kidnapper could be, but I was too late. There was a sudden crash and the lantern fell to the floor, and there was a brief scuffle in the shadows. By the light of the dying lantern I clearly saw the two wounds in Major Alva's neck.

I remember this was the point when I heard the heavy breathing for the second time in the castle, but now I was scared, not curious.
