Some games do end early. The shortest game I've played to the end is about 15-20 minutes. But my most memorable game was in one word epic. And it didn't end in the usual RTS fashion of complete annihilation, or the losers quitting.
It was a 3:3, and the tide of the battle turned back and forth constantly. Even when one of our opponents was the first to summon their titan, nobody was going to win for quite a while. Eventually, every player had a titan on the battlefield, and every player lost their titan eventually.
Finally, one opponent started to build their wonder, and I followed suit, building my own wonder. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish mine until 40 seconds after the enemy had finished their's. We were in a race against the clock to destroy their wonder, seeing as how destroying their wonder would guarantee our victory, as any counter attack they could muster wouldn't have enough time to destroy my wonder before time ran out.
And so we executed a massive three way attack in the direction of their wonder, giving it everything we had.In the end, we came just seconds of destroying it. I lost that game, but it was still the most exciting, most worthy game I ever played, and I am still content in the fact that I know I gave it my best. The only regret I had is that I didn't record that game.
I've never had an MP game of Warcraft III that came anywhere near that epic. And I doubt I ever will.
